Hungarian Rhapsody - Vienna to Budapest

Itinerary

Day1:
Arrival in Vienna

Individual arrival to the magical and lively city of Vienna.

Day 2:
Vienna to Bad Deutsch Altenburg, 29 miles (46 km)

The Danube-Cycle-Path leads you on quiet paths through the national park “Donauauen”, passing the castles of “Orth” and “Eckartsau” until you reach the former Roman city Petronell-Carnuntum, or the health resort Bad Deutsch Altenburg.

Day 3:
Bad Deutsch Altenburg via Bratislava to Mosonmagyarovar/Halaszi, 38 miles (61 km)

Follow the Danube cycling path to Bratislava, capital of Slovakia. A quaint old city centre with lovely pedestrian zones and countless restaurants and cafes. An extended stroll through this lovely historical city is a must. After visiting Bratislava you cycle to the "Little Alföld" which will also enchant you with its unique and outstanding character.

This section can be split with an extra night in Bratislava.

Day 4:
Mosonmagyarovar/Halaszi to Györ, 26 miles (45 km)

Today, you will cycle through the charming and idyllic landscape of the “Little Alföld” to Györ, one of the important cities of the Hungarian lowlands with a glamorous, historical city centre.

Day 5:
Györ to Tata, 38 miles (61 km)

Through a landscape of rolling hills you will cycle to the town of Tata with its lakes, located at the foot of the hill range “Gerecse”.

Day 6:
Tata to Esztergom, 34 miles (55 km)

The first part of the route is rather hilly and will lead you through the densely wooded hills of the “Gerecse” range. (Or if you prefer to avoid this part you can take the train approx. 12 miles – train fare not incl.). You will reach the divided city of Komarom (border-town between Hungary and Slovakia). Along the Slovakian Danube bank you cycle through small farming villages along a flat region to Esztergom.

Day 7:
Esztergom via Szentendre to Budapest, 36 miles (58 km)

Steep mountain slopes frame the stunning landscape of the Danube bends all the way to Szentendre Island. You can learn more about Hungarian Architecture in a nearby open-air museum. Continue by bike or boat (not included) to Budapest  - the choice is yours. The view from the sun-deck of the boat really is something to behold.

Day 8:
Departure from Budapest

The day is yours to explore the Hungarian capital up until your transfer bus departs for Vienna at 3.30pm. The bus arrives back in Vienna at approximately 6.30pm.
