Route of the Caliphate

Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrival in Cordova

Arrival in Cordoba. A walk through the old Jewish quarter to see its beautiful patios or you may like to experience an authentic flamenco show.

Day 2:
Cordova to Priego, 16 miles (26 km)

From Cordoba you go to Baena by bus. After breakfast in Baena, you set out towards Luque, and from there on quiet country lanes to Fuente Aljama. Riding through mountains, you pass the villages of Zagrilla Alta and Zagrilla Baja to arrive in Priego.

Day 3:
Priego to Zuheros, 34 miles (54km)

Leaving Priego you head for Carcabuey on an old disused road. Then past the village of Algar, you climb to the Gaena mountain pass. Then you have a long descent to the splendid town of Cabra. You take the "Vía Verde" (disused railway line) to the romantic village of Zuheros.

Day 4:
Zuheros to Alcalá la Real/Fuente del Rey, 38 miles (60km)

Today you bid farewell to the Subbetica mountains, to immerse yourselves in the countryside of Jaén, riding along the comfortable "Vía Verde". After passing the station in Alcaudete, you enter Nasrid territory and encounter the majestic "La Mota" fortress defending the town of Alcalá.

Day 5:
Alcalá la Real to Tózar, 18 miles (28km)

After visiting the La Mota fortress you head out of Alcalá la Real over its fertile plain riding between fields of cereal crops which are full of poppies in springtime. Once pass Casillas de Mures, the landscape changes and you head towards Tózar beneath the watchful eye of its imposing castle.

Day 6:
Tózar to Granada, 27 or 38 miles (43 or 60 km)

After climbing to Moclín you will enjoy great views of the Sierra Nevada during the descent to Olivares. You now approach Granada with the option of entering the city from the North, or a longer route through the foothills of the Alfaguara mountains.

Day 7:
Rest day in Granada

Today you explore the city of Granada and the amazing Alhambra. Delightful little corners, palaces and gardens abound in its old neighbourhoods, along with a multitude of tapas bars, restaurants and wine houses.

Day 8:
Departure from Granada

After breakfast it is time to leave Granada and make your way home.
