Rhone Route - Oberwald to Geneva

Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrival in Oberwald

Individual arrival to Oberwald, which is a small community in the canton of Valais. It is situated at 1377m (4,500 feet) above sea level and is located close to the Rhône Glacier which is the source of the Rhône River and one of the primary contributors to Lake Geneva.

Day 2:
Oberwald to Brig, 26 miles (42 km)

The initial trail is dramatic and varied; the curving sweep of the youthful Rhone, the chocolate brown chalets burnished by the Valais sun, a magnificent panoramic view over the mountains, and the road that descends in great style, giving you a captivating starting point. Overnight in Brig, where the old town is dominated by the three domed towers of the Stockalper castle.

Day 3:
Brig to Sion, 42 miles (67 km)

The route is flat and at times runs along the banks of the Rhone River, at others criss-crosses fertile fields and pastures. In Susten you may board a train (not included) for a few minutes since there is still no adequate bicycle path through the Pfynwald until Sierre. The trail is lined with fruit orchards and vineyards planted on steep terraces.

Day 4:
Sion to Martigny/Aigle, 36 miles (57 km)

Before the cycling today you will have time to explore Sion, the pleasant capital of the canton. However, a word of warning, do not leave it too late too start on this stretch because a stiff head wind blows quite frequently in the afternoon in the Rhone lowlands as you approach Martigny. In Aigle, the chateau and museum are worth a visit.

Day 5:
Martigny/Aigle to Lausanne, 27 miles (43 km)

Soon after leaving Aigle you will be cycling by Lake Geneva with its shimmering surface. On the way you will be able to visit the famous Chateau de Chillon. In Lausanne, home of the modern Olympic Games, there is plenty to see and do, from museums to shopping to lakeside cafes.

Day 6:
Lausanne to Coinsins/Duillier, 23 miles (37 km)

Final chance to visit the Olympic Museum before leaving Lausanne. As you cycle alongside Lake Geneva enjoy the beauty of the Valais. For lunch find a table on a shady restaurant terrace and order fish with white wine, a superb choice. Your overnight stay is near Nyon with its small fishing port and many restaurants.

Day 7:
Coinsins/Duillier to Geneva, 19 miles (31 km)

A nice easy day today as you cycle alongside the lake and sometimes the route leading you inland amongst vineyards. You soon reach Geneva with its famous fountain in the lake.

Day 8:
Departure from Geneva

Trip ends after breakfast.
