Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Spello

The tour starts in the quiet medieval town of Spello. Your hotel is situated in the medieval centre of Spello and has a lovely walled-in garden. The rooms are all with private facilities. At the end of the afternoon you will visit a wine bar, where you will start to become acqauainted with the Umbrian wines and titbits, such as ‘bruschette’ seasoned with a pâtés of tomatoes, different cheeses, hams and salami’s.

Day 2: Spello to Torgiano, 25 or 32 miles (41 or 52km)

The next morning you will still have some time to visit Spello, but then you will leave the town, cycling mostly through the valley, to visit Bevagna. Bevagna, a town of Roman origins, is situated in the wine area of the Sagrantino d.o.c.g. and the Rosso di Montefalco d.o.c. Leaving town you will visit a special organic vineyard.

Torgiano, an old once fortified town of which the tower of Baglioni is still a silent witness, is situated in a light hilly landscape at the confluence of the rivers Tiber and Chiascio. In the early middle ages the Benedictines planted in these fertile hills olive groves and vineyards and so they made a beginning with what now is a listed d.o.c.g. area where the famous Torgiano Rosso Riserva is made. If you have time it is a good idea to visit the wine museum, situated in the palazzo Grazioni-Baglioni. Here the visitor is provided with an insight into the varied techniques associated with the viticulture and wine-making processes. Your overnight stay is in a hotel with an appropriate name for this tour ‘Al Grappolo d’Oro’ (the golden bunch of grapes). A very special dinner will be prepared for you in a restaurant close by. You will taste many Umbrian dishes (different hors d’oevres, two ‘primi’ (pasta –risotto), two ‘secondi’ (main course), vegetables and a coffee with a grappa or another spirit).

Day 3: Torgiano to Assisi to Spello, 30 miles (48km)

After breakfast you cycle mostly over quiet country-roads through the valley to Assisi. To reach the old centre you will have to climb some, but it's certainly worthwhile because Assisi is really picturesque. After your visit you will continue cycling to Spello, but before you reach this town, you will be welcomed at a winery in this Assisi D.o.c. area. The owners will explain everything about the wine-making process and of course you will taste some of their excellent wines. After the wine-tasting there is only 4 km left to bike through olive groves until you reach Spello.

Day 4: Departure from Spello

All in all a special trip and you even don't have to worry about your luggage, because its all taken care of.
