In Austria’s south Styria region lies a truly native countryside dominated by a chain of ancient volcanoes that stretches along the border with Slovenia. Mighty fortress Riegersburg, first mentioned in 1122 as “stronghold of Christendom”, occupies a 482 m high volcano dominating the surrounding countrysider.
Walk up and down through light oak and beech forests, pumpkin fields and vineyards. Never extreme, always interesting. See rare bird species such as Roller and Golden Oriole, watch butterflies on flower meadows and enjoy the rural scenery transporting you back in time. Parts of the region are protected by Natura 2000 (guided tours with the ranger available upon request – bird watching!).
Rest in one of the numerous little farm taverns, “Buschenschanken”, where homemade meals are served with crisp white wine. Excellent quality at a rather low price is one of the secrets of success. Tasty pumpkin-seed oil, bacon and cheese of own farm production, everything arranged in an appetising way, served with homemade bread and Austrian charm.
The old volcanoes reach a height of up to 700 m (Stradener Kogel) and are very well developed with a network of walking paths. You walk on well kept hiking paths, forest and meadow lanes as well as on solitary asphalted country lanes. There are hills every day, therefore stamina for walking times up to 5 hours is required.
