Summary

Eight alpine countries in Europe are working together on a challenging project: their common goal is to establish official hiking trails linking all their alpine countries, from Trieste at the Adriatic Sea to Monaco on the Mediterranean, thereby opening up exciting new territory for the hiker.
The route is officially signposted as such and endowed with multilingual documentation boards. The Swiss section of the project is being managed by SAW (Swiss Hiking Federation), and the routes of the Via Alpina that cross Swiss territory are part of the red and green trails taking the walker from East to West through the Alps.

Part 1 of the green route runs from the Rhine Valley into Canton Glarus, over the Klausen Pass into Canton Uri, on to Engelberg and into the Bernese Oberland to end in the town of Meiringen. Veritably, a trail of unsurpassable beauty awaits.
