Salzburg's St Jacob's Way

Itinerary

Day 1:
Seekirchen on Lake Wallersee

The friendly, rural village of Seekirchen lies beside the Wallersee, the largest and warmest lake in Salzburger Land. It is situated in the heart of the Salzburger Seenplatte and is not very far from the lakes of the Salzkammergut and lies in enchanting untouched countryside just 15km north of the festival and capital town of Salzburg. Here you will find wide, open, rolling countryside, flowering meadows, shadywoods and gentle hills offering plentiful views.

Day 2:
By train to Oberhofen to Eugendorf, 14 miles (23 km)

By train you reach Oberhofen, where Salzburg’s Jacobs Trail starts. First you walk past soft green hills down to Lake Wallersee. Follow it to Eugendorf.

Day 3:
Eugendorf to Salzburg, 9 miles (14 km)

Distant mountains are greeting the pilgrim and pointing to the destination. A comfortable walk brings you downhill to Salzburg, where a wealth of churches and ecclesiastical monuments wait to be discovered. A detour to Maria Plain, a baroque pilgrim church towering high over Salzburg is worth the effort.

Day 4:
Salzburg to Großgmain/Bad Reichenhall, 11 miles (18 km)

Across the city you walk into the direction of mount Untersberg. At the little town of Großgmain you cross the German border to Rupert’s Winkl and afterwards you reach the Bavarian salt metropolis Bad Reichenhall. (Ruperti Winkl is the area around Berchtesgaden and Bad Reichenhall. He was a Saint for Salzburg and Berchtesgaden and as both areas belonged together it was call Rupertiwinkl. Now only the Bavarian part is still called this, but only by the locals.)

Day 5:
Bad Reichenhall to Unken, 11 miles (17 km)

Today you follow the river Saalach back into the country of Salzburg. Past Lake Salzachsee you walk deeper and deeper into the mountains. The hiking path partly follows the river bank, sometimes wildly gushing through steep rock walls.

Day 6:
Unken to Waidring/St. Ulrich, 16 miles (26 km)

At first you follow the river Saalach into the widening valley around Lofer, a mountain village of great original charm. In front of you the steep rocks of mountain range Loferer Steinberge seem to scrape the sky. You cross via Strubpass into Tyrol.

Day 7:
Waidring/St. Ulrich to St. Johann, 10 miles (16 km)

You have a choice of routes today. You can follow the the dyke path to St. Johann or past Lake Pillersee and St. Jacob’s church to St. Johann.
