The Way of St James, Beaune to Cluny

Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrival in Beaune

You arrive at your hotel in Beaune, the capital of wine. Places to visit: the “Chapelle Saint Jacques”, the “Commanderie du Temple” and the “Hospices”.

Day 2:
Beaune - Chagny, 11 miles (18km)

You will begin by crossing through the vineyards on the hills of the Hautes Côtes de Beaune and on through the villages of Volnay and Meursault where you will find the remains of an ancient castle. You will then reach Chagny with its XVth observation tower and pretty houses.

Day 3:
Chagny – Givry, 12 miles (19km)

You will continue crossing the vineyards via Rully and the Gallo-Roman camp, known as the “Camp de César”, and the charming village of Mercurey with its ramparts. Passing crosses, washhouses and vintner houses, you will arrive in Givry.

Day 4:
Givry – Saint Gengoux le National, 11 miles (17km)

This route along the “Voie Verte” will allow you to discover forest scenery and country villages with “cadoles” (small stone huts built by vine growers), washhouses, fountains… Once you get to Saint Gengoux le National you will be able to visit the Romanesque Church with ramparts, gargoyles and belfry…

Day 5:
Saint Gengoux le National - Cluny, 14 miles (23km)

The countryside is hillier in this area as you make your way to the tourist site of Cormatin and Taizé, the great place of pilgrimage. Finally, to Cluny, so influential on religion, intellect, art and politics in the middle ages. Visit the Abbey, the fortification remains, the “Haras National” (Stud farm)…

Day 6:
Departure from Cluny

After breakfast it is time for your departure from Cluny by taxi to Macon train station
