Chiemgau Alps – From Lake Konigssee to Lake Chiemsee

Itinerary

Day 1 (Saturday):
Arrive at Lake Konigssee

Arrive at Schoenau on Lake Konigssee

Day 2 (Sunday):
Lake Konigssee to Weißbach, 11 miles (18km) - 5.5 hours

A comfortable walk passing Lake Hintersee deep into the heart of the Berchtesgaden National Park. Scenic views as you walk, with ragged peaks of Reiter Alp to the right and Hochkalterer Mountain on the left. On alpine pastures you walk down through the Seisenbergklamm gorge into the Saalach river valley and to your overnight stop in Weißbach.

Day 3 (Monday):
Weißbach to Lofer, 8 miles (13.5km) - 5 hours

You walk in the Saalach river valley to the Lamprechtshöhle cave-system (longest water-coursed cave of Europe) and Vorderkaserklamm, with natural swimming pool. Continue the walk to St. Martin, where you can climb up to the pilgrim’s church “Maria im Kirchental”. The pilgrim’s church nestles in an idyllic side valley in the steep walls of Loferer Steinberge.

Day 4 (Tuesday):
Lofer to Reit im Winkl, 10 miles (15.5km) - 6 hours

A cable car takes you up to the alpine pasture Loferer Alm, where the high level path to Steinplatte starts. You walk across alpine pastures and through solitary mountain forests to the summit of Steinplatte. Walk down to Winkelmoos Alm, a famous large alpine pasture, and take the bus to Reit im Winkl.

Day 5 (Wednesday):
Rest day in Reit im Winkl

Enjoy a rest day in the well-known resort Reit im Winkl.

Alternatively you can do the classic mountain walk, starting in Reit im Winkl to the summit of Fellhorn. As the name implies, the ridge is free of forest and covered by a “field” of alpine-roses.

Day 6 (Thursday):
Reit im Winkl to Marquartstein, 9.5 miles (15km) - 5 hours

“The Eye of Chiemgau”, a poetic name for Lake Taubensee, an idyllic mountain lake, filling a hollow on the mountain Rauhe Ndel. Although the day is quite long, it is pleasant hike among alpine pastures.

Day 7 (Friday):
Marquartstein to Aschau, 9 miles (14.5km) - 6 hours

An upward hike through mountain forest to the alpine pastures of Hochplatte and Kampenwand enjoying stunning views of Lake Chiemsee. Follow the hiking path along the walls of Kampenwand. If you are sure-footed you can tackle the summit. Downhill you take the comfortable cable car to Aschau which is about 3km from Lake Chiemsee.

Day 8 (Saturday):
Departure from Lake Chiemsee

End of the holiday so time to start your journey home.
