South Tyrol’s Chestnut and Wine Trail

Itinerary

Day 1 (Sun):
Individual arrival at Brixen

Make your way to Brixen in the South Tyrol. Enjoy a stroll in the city; visit the White Dome and Bishops Residence. Not to forget monastery Neustift, which is famous for the excellent Sylvane wine. In the evening there is a welcome meeting and introduction of the tour.

Day 2 (Mon):
Brixen to Klausen, 5-6 hrs, 9 miles (15km)

Leaving Brixen you walk up mount Pfeffersberg. On beautiful terraces past hamlets and farms to the south mighty Dolomites tower – that makes your day. You reach Feldthurns and monastery Säben, perched on top of a hill and one of the oldest monasteries in South Tyrol. From there you make your way to your hotel in the town of Klausen.

Day 3 (Tue):
Klausen to Bolzano via Barbian, 5-6 hrs, 12 miles (19km)

Short transfer to Barbian, where the tour starts to Bolzano. Above Eisack valley is Ritten, a popular holiday resort for Bolzano’s jet set. You will stop again and again to drink in the stunning views of the Dolomites, first of all the Schlern Massive. Then past picturesque earthen pyramids you will enjoy a ride on the Rittner train, which brings you to Bolzano. In the evening a stroll through this truly European city reveals a peaceful meeting of Italian and Austrian culture.

Day 4 (Wed):
Bolzano – Lake Kaltern surroundings, 5 hrs, 11 miles (18km)

The sunny south of South Tyrol is awaiting you! Today you will discover the area around South Tyrol’s most famous lake, Lake Kaltern, a renowned wine growing region. But here, it is not only the vineyards that impress, but also the numerous castles, manor houses, churches and farms. A must for every wine lover is a visit to the South Tyrolean wine museum in Kaltern, which gives an insight into the history of South Tyrolean’s wine.

Day 5 (Thu):
Lake Kaltern surroundings circuit, 6 hrs, 12 miles (20km)

The South Tyrolean wine route: a tip for every wine lover and connoisseur. Picturesque vineyards and fascinating landscapes are accompanying you on your way. The most famous wines of the region and many of the well-known wine producers are found in this area. In Kurtatsch, the home of the “Gewürztraminer”, we invite you for a walk on the “wine nature trail” to learn more about the interaction between wine, grapes and vines.

Day 6 (Fri):
Lake Kaltern surroundings to Meran, 4 hrs, 12 miles (20km)

After breakfast transfer to Lana. Shortly after Lana the hiking route continues along the famous Marlinger Waals – the longest irrigation ditch in South Tyrol. These irrigation ditches known as “Waale” were constructed hundred of years ago and today make wonderful paths used for hiking and walking. The route continues below Tyrol Castle along the famous “Tappeiner Weg” towards Meran. The Empress Sissi knew how to appreciate the mild climate. Inviting centuries old Arbours and superb parks add to the completion of a perfect day.

Day 7 (Sat):
Departure from Meran

Departure from Meran or an extension of stay might be required.
