West Sicily & the Egadi Islands

Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrival at Trapani

Arrival in Palermo or Trapani airport and private transfer to Scopello, a small village dating back to the seventeenth-century.
The village of Scopello is located 100 meters above sea level not far from the Zingaro Nature Oriented Reserve. It is one of the most picturesque places in the province of Trapani and is renowned for the homonymous tuna fish station, which during 1500 was one of the most productive in Sicily. In Scopello you’ll be shown the tour and given some informative document and your hire bikes as well.

Day 2:
Hiking to Scopello

Hiking to the Zingaro Park: the coastline that stretches between Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo has become a nature reserve, the first established in Sicily, since 1980. It is one of the unspoiled and most charming areas in Sicily and can be explored only on foot. The reserve is a place of great value not only for the beauty of the little bays where you can stop for a refreshing swim, but, above all, for the presence of endemic species both animal and vegetal and the woods of dwarf palm. You can stop for a swim at any of the little bays along the coast path or climb up the mountain to enjoy a wonderful view on the Gulf of Castellammare. Visiting the Museum of Contrada Sughero it’ll be possible to discover usages and customs of the people that lived in the Park at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Day 3:
Scopello to San Vito Lo Capo, 3 hours

The coastline between Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo is one of the most unspoiled and charming areas in Sicily and can be explored only on foot. You can stop for a swim at any of the little bays along the coast path. At 4.00pm, at the exit to the Nature Reserve you will be transferred to your hotel in San Vito Lo Capo, a small seaside town with an amazing sandy beach. San Vito is the perfect place to taste the cous cous (a typical North African dish) and only there can you taste the wonderful but slightly naughty "Caldofreddo" (hot & cold) which is a cup with ice cream, cookie, rum with hot chocolate on the top. You will have deserved one!

Day 4:
The Egadi Islands, 3-4 hours

After breakfast you will be transferred to the port of Trapani from where the hydrofoils depart for the Egadi islands, a mini-archipelago off the northwest coast. Marettimo is the most remote of these islands. In the afternoon walking to the Spanish castle of Punta Troia. It is the first contact with this wild island breathing the sea air and the scent of aromatic plants. As well as the walking, the real joy is in the simple pleasures — sunning yourself on an empty, rocky beach, watching the fishing boats offload their catch on to wooden trolleys to be sold through the village. Overnight in great hotel in Marettimo.

Day 5:
Island of Marettimo, 4 hours

Leaving the town and following a mule - track climbing up the mountain you can reach Case Romane and find some roman ruins and a small temple dating back, probably, to the first centuries of the christian era and testifying Marettimo was a seat of a Roman fortified place. Back to Marettimo for the night.

Day 6:
Rest day with options

Today you have a choice. You can either take a boat ride to the island of Levanza where you can relax for the day before returning by boat to Marettimo or you can stay on the island of Marettimo and enjoy a further walk.

Day 7:
Marettimo to Trapani

Today you return by Hydrofoil to Trapani. Then you can walk to your hotel in Trapani overlooking the marina to leave your luggage and decide how to spend the rest of your day.

One option is to walk to Erice, the medieval town on the top of the hill overlooking Trapani. In ancient times Erice was an important religious centre for the Elymians. An easier way to reach Erice is by cable car. After exploring Erice you return to your hotel in Trapani.

Another option would be to spend the day exploring the ancient port of Trapani.

Day 8:
Departure from Trapani

Departure from Trapani after breakfast.
