Via Alpina

Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrival in Jezersko

This small romantic village is situated on Slovene – Austrian border, north of Ljubljana. Its setting in a basin among peaks of Stone Alps makes it a perfect starting point for this trip. Two nights in a 3* Hotel.

Day 2:
Circular tour from Jezersko - descend and ascend 640m. Approx 2 hours of walking

A warm-up hike to Ceska Koca mountain hut. The walk leads up just above the forest line to one of the oldest alpine huts in Slovenia. Return via Shepherds Lake.

Day 3:
Jezersko to Preddvor - descend 1100m and ascend 900m. Approx 6 hours walking

A longer hike down to the valley. This days walk begins with a short transfer to the starting point. Following a narrow valley you ascend Baseljsko sedlo, just before reaching a mountain hut on Kokra saddle. This is a wonderful viewpoint and a great setting for a tasty lunch. The afternoon walk descends through hillside villages to Preddvor and past Crnava Lake to your hotel. Overnight in a 3* Country hotel.

Day 4:
Preddvor to surroundings of Tržic - ascend 200m. Approx 4 hours walking

A connecting valley walk in a westerly direction takes you through several typical villages of the area. Wide meadows of alpine flowers are dotted with famous Slovenian hay-drying racks. The walk continues via the foot of Karawanke range, in the distance the Julian Alps peaks are visible. Overnight in a 2* Boarding house.

Day 5:
Tržic to Begunje - descend 700m, ascend 250m. Approx 4 hours walking

A short car transfer to the border and starting point at Ljubelj. A little unusually the hike begins by a short underground walk through a tunnel, once dug to shorten the merchants route connecting Carniola with Carinthia. Continuing in a westerly direction the route follows the trails of shepards, passing wide meadows of alpine flowers. Walking through the quiet valley of Draga, below ruins of the ancient Kamen castle, one reaches Begunje – home of famous Avseniki musicians. Overnight in a 3* Boarding house.

Day 6:
Begunje to Bled - descend 150m, ascend 200m. Approx 5 hours walking

This is an easy days walk. Leaving Begunje you first climb to the little St. Petrus church, which in the days of Turkish raids was an important sentry point. A longer ridge walk follows, with superb views of the Julian Alps range on the opposite Sava valley side. Before reaching Bled, there is time to explore the Vintgar gorge – a canyon formed by the River Radovna and part of Triglav National park. Overnight in a 3* Hotel.

Day 7:
End of the walking holiday

Departure after breakfast or you can extend your holiday by staying some extra nights in Bled.

NB The walking times take account of an average walker. These are nett times (i.e. not including rests or lunch stops).
