Itinerary

Day1:
Arrival in Granada

Arrival in Granada where you can visit the Alhambra, a complex of fortress, royal palaces and gardens (tickets need to be bought in advance). At night you can try the famous “tapas” and perhaps discover some traditional flamenco.

Day 2:
Granada to Busquístar

After breakfast you have time for a stroll through the delightful streets of Granada (or visit the Alhambra) before taking a local bus (they are modern and comfortable) to Busquístar (at 12.00 or at 16.30). The journey takes about 3 hours, but the time will fly as you watch the landscape slowly change as you leave Granada and climb up into the mountains to penetrate the inaccessible lands that were the last stronghold of Granada’s Moorish population. In Busquístar you stay in an old restored village house, once the residence of the village notary. Enjoy the stunning views of the valley from the balcony of your room…

Day 3:
Circular walk from Busquístar, 9 miles (14km); 6 hrs; (shorter route available)

A great circular walk from Busquístar! Crossing the river Treveléz you climb to the other side where you can enjoy the views of the white villages of the Taha de Pitres. Walk back through the villages of Fondales, Mecina and Ferreirola, and try the natural Spa water of its fountains…

(There is also a short relaxing walk of 3 hours available if preferred)

Day 4:
Busquístar to Trevélez, 9 miles (14km), 5 hrs

Today you walk to your next destination, Trevélez, passing through an oak forest, accompanied by the alluring scent of thyme, oregano and lavender. Trevélez lies at the foot of the Mulhacén and this village is the highest of Spain (1478 m) and famous for its cured ham (“jamón Serrano”). (700m ascent, 400m descent)

Day 5:
Treveléz- Berchules, 9 miles (14km); 5-6 hrs

Bit by bit we climb to the highest point (2000 m). Today you can enjoy the fantastic views while you are walking to the next village Berchules.

Day 6:
Berchules to Yegen, 7 miles (12km); 4-5 hrs

You take the GR7-trail to Mecina, crossing the green "barranco”  (gorge) on an old path between both villages. In Mecina you can stop for refreshments and then you continue on the trail to Montenegro and Yegen. (200m ascent, 400m descent)

Day 7:
Choice of circular walks from Yegen, 3 and 1.5 miles (4 and 2km)

You can do one of the small circular walks from the village or do them both!

1) Trail “Walk of the Health” (4 km, ca 2 hours), the Sendero de la Salud is a walk which climbs to the Fountain of the Health and heads back to Yegen through a beautiful gorge bordered by huge chestnut trees.

2) Brenan Trail (Sendero de Brenan): an agreeable stroll that was a favourite of the famous English writer, Gerald Brenan, once resident of Yegen (2 km, but it takes about 1,5 hours). Walking through olive and almond groves, and visiting the ancient fortress at Peñon del Fuerte, you enjoy views over a fairytale lunar landscape, returning to Yegen climbing along an old trail which ends at an interesting old fountain and wash-stone.

Day 8:
Yegen to Granada and departure from Granada

Early in the morning or in the afternoon you head back to Granada by bus (at 6.05 or 15.30). The journey takes more or less 3 hours (arrival 9.15 or 19.00); in Granada bus station buses leave to Malaga at 9.30 and 10). Make the most of the ride to enjoy scenery unique in Europe as you wind through the mountains.
