Itinerary
There are no fixed programs, we will adapt in order to satisfy our clients requirements and the following are suggestions only
Day 1:
Make your way from Faro or Lisbon airport to the guesthouse at Vila Nova de Milfontes. This beautiful town on the Mira estuary will be your start and finish point and is well worth exploring. It is alleged that it was where Hannibal landed with his elephants to start his European trek.
Day 2:
Calces and Torgal streams are tributaries of the river Mira, and fine examples of the extended Mediterranean oak woodlands that long ago completely covered this region. Uphill to Calces through scented fields of rockroses to enjoy the fantastic views. The rest of the day will be spent under the canopy of the wooded riverbanks and then descending into the gorge of Torgal. Enjoy a rest at the spectacular lagoons of Pêgo das Pias. 6 hours - Level 2
Day 3:
It is possible to walk all along the coast, from Porto Côvo to Odeceixe, walking on top of the cliffs and up and down on the beaches. Routes are flexible and the choice is all yours, but the blooming dunes of Cavaleiro are the best place to watch the storks nesting on the top of the rocks. The magnificent lighthouse in Cabo Sardão; the picturesque tiny fishing harbours: Portinho do Canal, Lapa das Pombas, Entrada da Barca or Azenha do Mar; the deserted beaches of Brejo Largo or Tonel are also interesting…places not to be missed, but the stunning views are the real feature of these routes. 3 to 6 hours - Level 1 to 2
Day 4:
In the interior of the county there are many small villages sparsely populated or almost abandoned. Some of them will be discovered on this route. Heading off from Pomar, you will walk along the Gavião valley to the village and climb up to the mill to enjoy the excellent view. Returning through the Feixe valley. 6 hours - Level 2
Day 5:
S. Luís, situated on the old North South route, was once a town of some importance. Surrounded by orchards and vegetable plots, it is crowned by the hill range Serra de S. Luis. You start by climbing up the Cerro de São Domingos, up to the forest watchtower and one of the most spectacular views of this area over the river Mira and to the sea. As you go down, it is possible to return to the village to make this a short day walk, or you can go up again on a very steep slope to the Penedo, an enormous rock where the views are even more spectacular. 3 to 5 hours - Level 2 to 3
Day 6:
Between the villages of S. Teotónio to the county capital, Odemira, you walk through the cool and shaded valleys where plants as extraordinary as rhododendron and peonies grow. You will learn about cork farming and production along the hills of “montado”, under the inquisitive sight of the buzzards. 4 hours - Level 2
Day 7:
Santo André and Sancha coastal lagoons are located north from Sines, about 40 Km. from Vilanova de Milfontes. It is worth travelling to visit this significant wetlands, Ramsar site housing a wide range of bird life, specially wildfowl and it is a crowded migration stopover for many flamingos and ibises. The excursion will be mainly on sandy soils and along the beach and the views are magnificent. 3 hours - Level 1
Day 8:
Trip ends after breakfast and you make your way back to Faro or Lisbon
