Travel
- Fly to Vienna train to Payerbach
Characteristics
Higher elevations are crossed by cable car or train. Nevertheless shorter but steep climbs have to be taken into account. You walk on plateaus of alpine character and you should have a fair stamina and some experience for self-guided walking holidays of up to 5.5 hours walking time.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at Payerbach
Arrive at the health resort of Payerbach
Day 2: Train-heritage trail Semmering, 12 miles (19 km) - 6.5 hours.
Take the mountain train to the well-known town of Semmering. The “train-heritage” trail explores the route of the Ghega-train, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, with striking viaducts crossing deep valleys and gorges and an idyllic, peaceful country.
(it is possible to shorten the route by taking the train again)
Day 3: High walk on Rax Plateau, 9 miles (14 km) - 4 hours.
Up to the Rax plateau by cable car, where several options are available for every taste and ability. Enjoy stunning views over the surrounding mountain world. (there are more possibilities to cross the plateau – so from 3 to 6 hours walking is possible)
Day 4: Across Bodenwiesen alpine pasture to Puchberg, 15 miles (24 km) - 7 hours.
The demanding ascent to Waldburg-Anger cabin is followed by a comfortable walk across the huge high alpine pasture of Bodenwiese. Down into the valley on easy forest roads past small ponds. Enjoy the views of the mighty Schneeberg (Snowy Mountain) so you can imagine yourself being in the central Alps. Overnight in Puchberg.
(possible to take the train to the next hotel)
Day 5: By rack-railway up on Schneeberg, 7 miles (12 km) - 4 hours.
Today you take the famous rack-railway up to Schneeberg an elevation of more than 2.000 m. The summit is not far away and the views of the Alps are amazing. Do not miss a local pastry called “Buchtel” at the middle-station – a delicious speciality!
Day 6: By train to the foot of Hohe Wand (High Wall), 8 miles (12.5 km) - 5 hours.
Through the forest, sometimes steep paths, up to Hohe Wand, a popular rock-wall for climbers. Don’t worry, we chose a comfortable climb. You can see almost to Vienna. Return by the ridge, past farms and small hamlets to Puchberg.
Day 7:
Time to make your way home by train via Wiener Neustadt to Payerbach or into Vienna.
