The Trans Swiss Trail runs diagonally across the Jura region and confronts the hiker with new impressions and surprises every day. The westernmost part of Switzerland is called the Ajoie; a grassland at only 400 metres above sea level where cereals are grown and carp abound in the plentiful ponds. From that grassy plain the route dips down dramatically to the deeply gouged gorge of the River Doubs; only one hiking day later you find yourself up on the undulating plateau of the Franches-Montagnes amongst mighty pine trees. Onward and upward to the Mont Soleil vantage point with its glorious view and down again into the Saint-Imier valley, the cradle of the Swiss watchmaking industry. The route then skirts the Chasseral towards the wide grain fields of Val de Ruz before finally sloping down to Neuchâtel - into the region of the 3 Lakes.
