Itinerary
This holiday can be organised as 6 days/5 nights starting at Linthal. Cost is reduced to £310ppDay 1:
Arrival in Buchs
Day 2:
A gentle start to the Via Alpina. From Buchs railway station you follow the left edge of the Rhine Valley on your way to Sargans. En route you’ll pass the pretty village of St Ulrichen, and while walking the Sevelen Ravine Path you will make close acquaintance with the secretive brooding Geissbergtobel canyon. From Sargans you take the postal bus transfer to Weisstannen. Buchs – Sargans. 13 miles, 5.5 hours
Day 3:
Recommendation: The hotel owner will drive you to Untersäss thereby shortening your hiking time by 2 hours (fee CHF 10.-/person).
This long stretched-out pass crossing Foo Pass 2223 m leads into wild scenery with magnificent waterfalls. After the first steep section you are rewarded with a glorious view looking back into the Weisstannen valley. The warning whistling of marmots will accompany you in this remote mountain world. Overnight in Elm. Untersäss – Elm.
21 miles, 5.5 hours
Day 4:
Recommendation: Take the aerial cable car from Elm (997m) to Empächli (1485m).
On this easy panoramic high mountain trail with superb views into Sernf Valley and the Glarus Alps, you will reach Obererbs with a mountain cabin serving refreshments. This is where the climb starts in earnest up to Erbser Stock, on to Wichlenmatt grassland and up further to Richetli Pass (2261m). The descent is long and nowhere is there an inviting cable car in sight. Overnight in Linthal. Empächli – Linthal.
13 miles, 5 hours
Day 5:
Recommendation: Take the areial cable car from Linthal to Braunwald.
If you cut out the climb to Braunwald by taking the cable car, you will enjoy a beautiful relaxing panoramic route without any climbs of note. And so ample time remains to browse around and experience alpine summer life in the holiday resort of Braunwald undisturbed by cars, and also Urnerboden Switzerland’s largest Alp. Braunwald – Urnerboden.
9 miles, 3 hours
Day 6:
Recommendation: Take aerial cable car from Urnerboden to Fiseten Pass.
The Clariden mountain trail from Fiseten Pass (2036m) to Klausen Pass (1948m) does not actually run over Mt Clariden, but you nevertheless get to feel the enormity of the massif and the cold breath of the nearby glacier. From Fiseten Pass you walk beneath the North Face of the Clariden affording daring views into the depths of the Klus and on to the Klausen Pass. From the top of the pass the route heads further west and initially leaves the pass road far below it before it descends into Urigen.
Take the postal bus from Urigen to Attinghausen, your overnight stay. Fiseten Pass – Urigen.
10 miles, 5 hours
Day 7:
Recommendation: Take the cable car up to Brüsti (1530m). Hike: Brüsti – Fürenalp 5 hours
This is an historic pass walk which begins in Brüsti with a spectacular ridge walk from which there is a grand vista over Lake Uri. The ensuing picnic area with fire place will be very welcome. The descent to Surenen Pass (2291m) takes you over delightful alpine meadows to Blackenalp where refreshments may be obtained, and then on to Stalden. It is worth taking the intersecting path over to Fürenalp to enable you to reach Engelberg in comfort by cablecar.
11 miles, 5 hours
Day 8:
Recommendation: Take cable car up to Joch Pass
Hike: Joch Pass – Planplatten 5 hours
A breathtaking panoramic hiking trail with only minimal differences in altitude but magnificent views of Mt Titlis, Engstlensee (lake) and the Bernese Alps. Upon reaching Planplatten, those wishing to stretch the hiking out can walk through flowering alpine meadows on a path gently descending to Käserugg from where a cable car awaits to transport you into the valley below and your hotel in Meiringen.
11 miles, 5 hours
