Cycling History

As a child I was presented with two options - either I could cycle to school every day come rain or shine, or use my pocket money to pay for the bus. The choice was obvious! I did not take the school bus for my entire education. I have since progressed from cycling as purely a means of transport, to also a leisurely activity. I now own two bikes, a hybrid, and a mountain bike so I can access nearby countryside and off road tracks.

Favourite Tour

Every time I liaise with Freedom Trek holidaymakers it makes me want to visit new places! My must-visit list is therefore ever-growing, especially as we have now introduced Freedom Trek’s trips to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. I have recently got back from a rather luxurious trip on-board The Harmonia in Croatia exploring various islands by boat and bike, (the likes of Brač, Havr and Split).  It was a perfect mix of activity and relaxation.

Last Tour

In March 2017 both the Freedom Trek team and our sister company Ski Safari spent a long weekend sampling a section of the ever popular Bolzano to Venice tour.  Here we enjoyed leisurely cycling, glorious food, traffic-free roads and many of the delights of Venice. In 2018 I was lucky enough to do part of the South Dalmatia - Deluxe tour which afforded a gorgeous mix of historical and highly pretty towns, friendly locals, tiny bays and some moderate to challenging cycling! One of the highlights was being transported around the blue Adriatic by an extremely shiny yacht!

Next Tour

Cycling is an awesome pace to travel at and as long as I’m rewarded with panoramic views and good food I’ll keep smiling. I wouldn’t mind a trip to Slovenia, and cycling to me sounds like the ideal means to get around.

Best Travel Memory

Either coming face to face with a particularly bellicose saltwater crocodile named Trevor on the Adelaide River in Australia or walking ‘The Routeburn’ one of New Zealand’s ‘Great Walks.’  It was even an adventure getting there. My friend and I didn’t get off to the best start by catching the wrong bus to the walk’s beginning. We only noticed about 2 hours into the transfer journey!

Strangest Travel Experience

Meeting a man who bore a striking resemblance to Jafar from Disney’s Aladdin in the Sahara. I turned down his offer to take me to Albania.

Top Travel Tip

Travel more, travel light and always start the day with a positive attitude!

Interesting Fact

Apparently, the early cycles were referred to as velocipedes and the word ‘bicycle’ only arrived in 1868!
