The Trip

Route

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive in Bruges

There are four fantastic cycle tours to choose from, making use of the easy to navigate cycle network around Bruges. Here is a suggested itinerary or you can choose your own from the routes provided.

Make your way to Bruges and start exploring its canals and cobbled streets, or relax with a coffee in its 13th century market square. If you arrive early enough, you could head out for your first cycle, visiting the forests, parks and nature reserves around Bulskampveld.

(Please advise us if you will need your bikes on the arrival day).

  • Day 2: De Haan 32 miles (52 km)

Tour through the picturesque village of Lissewege to the beautiful seaside town of De Haan and stop for a potter around its ivy covered cottages and Hansel and Gretel houses. Cycle between the sea and sand dunes, stopping off to stretch out on a beach or take a dip in the sea.

  • Day 3: Knokke 36 miles (59 km)

Cycle beside peaceful canals through the picturesque village of Damme and stop off for a bowl of moules-frites before continuing to the seaside resort of Knokke to lie back on its blonde sands, enjoy an ice-cream or browse the beer menus in its leafy streets.

  • Day 4: Wijnendaele 43 miles (69 km)

This ride takes you southwest of Bruges, to the castles around Torhout and Wijnendaele in West Flanders. Situated on a plateau 20 metres higher than the surrounding countryside, Wijnendaele’s modest hill gives beautiful views across the Flemish countryside. Reward yourself with a pile of guilt-free Belgian waffles on your return to Bruges.

  • Day 5: Depart from Bruges

Check out after breakfast or extend your stay with an extra night – a good idea if you missed the scenic ride on day one.

Overall our 4 day Freedom Treks holiday was fantastic. We chose to stay at the hotel a little outside of Bruges as it was a little cheaper. And we could not be happier with our choice. The hotel was convenient to the bike routes, it was extremely easy to get in and out of Bruges on our bikes. The accommodations, food and hotel staff were excellent. The bike routes took us through some beautiful areas and gave us a true taste of cycling the paths in Belgium. I would suggest that for anyone doing this, if you are not familiar with how the bike route system works, that you research it a bit before you go. Although we had fun on our first day, we spent a good part of it lost. Pretty places to be lost though.

If you've never tried a cycling holiday before, you just can't go wrong with this company. From the pre-booking help and advice, to the trouble free booking and receiving of documents, right through to little details like the size of the bikes, and even a plastic pocket to keep the map and route information, everything is to hand to help the novice have a thoroughly enjoyable experience. We chose to venture on the 'romantic cycling around Brugge' holiday in Belgium as we knew that the countryside was bike-friendly and flat, and we were delighted with our experience. The pre-prepared routes were varied, coastal, rural, city, cultural, something for all. (But one could also plan individual routes due to the excellent map of cycle tracks provided). We did a bit of both, and only got 'lost' once"! The cycle network and signage is excellent in Belgium, even detours were highlighted in with temporary orange diversion route signs! We opted to stay at the standard hotel, it being so handy to get on to the cycle routes and with ample free parking. It was a wise choice, as the accommodation, staff and food was first class. All in all we thoroughly recommend anyone who enjoys cycling to go ahead and book a cycling holiday with Freedom Treks, you won't be disappointed. A big thank you to Sarah Dean who was an excellent ambassador for for the company and gave us the information and encouragement to venture on our first cycling holiday, which won't be our last!
