Overview

What to expect

See the very best of Holland come alive as you cycle the quiet paths between some of the country’s best-loved cities and sights. From the windmills of Zaanse Schans to the beautiful streets of Haarlem, Amsterdam’s canals to the red-brick houses of Volendam, this tour takes you to the heart of this charming country. Take time to try tasty cheese or pancakes, see clogs being made and explore fascinating museums.

Cycling distances on this tour are intentionally short to allow time for sightseeing, but time spent on the bike takes you along flat cycle paths through beautiful green countryside. If you’re thinking of travelling in April or May, there’s even the chance to extend your rides to see the stunning rows of colourful tulips that arrive in spring.

The Trip

Route

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive in Amsterdam

Arrive in Amsterdam and explore the 17th Century canal district (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) or visit a museum; Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House.

  • Day 2: Amsterdam – Haarlem 18 miles (29 km)

Cycle through the low-lying landscape to historical Haarlem and explore the courtyards, known as ‘hofjes’, and the impressive Grote Markt square.

If you are travelling in April or early May, you have the option of taking a longer route through tulip fields totalling 37 miles (60km).

  • Day 3: Haarlem – Zaandam 24 miles (38 km)

Ride along the River Spaarne to the village of Spaarndam, built around the Ijdijk dike. Visit the monument of the boy Hans Brinker who famously stuck his finger in the dike and saved the village. Visit the Kolkluis, (Kolk Sluice), Amsterdam’s oldest still functioning lock, dating from the Middle Ages. Cycle on to the well-preserved, working windmills at the museum village of Zaanse Schans and learn how to make clogs and cheese.

  • Day 4: Zaandam – Volendam 21 miles (34 km)

A short cycle to Het Twiske, a recreational park with lovely swimming and picnic spots, before riding on through woodland and meadows and past lakes to the fishing village of Monnickendam on the bank of the IJsselmeer. Walk along the harbour with its centuries-old fishing trawlers and see if you can catch a whiff of fresh eel being smoked. Finish in the neighbouring fishing port of Volendam where you can enjoy a drink on De Dijk overlooking the water and sample freshly caught seafood.

  • Day 5: Volendam – Amsterdam 22 miles (36 km)

Visit Volendam’s interesting history and folklore museum before cycling to  Marken, a former island in the Markermeer, with a photogenic lighthouse dating back to 1839.  Make your way back to Amsterdam where you can enjoy all that this great city has to offer.

  • Day 6: Depart from Amsterdam

Make your way home after breakfast or extend your stay in Amsterdam.

Another great trip with Freedom Treks for the 3rd year running. This year we chose Holland and was rather easy going as expected. Really enjoyed the Dutch who were very hospitable. Next year we'll look to test ourselves a bit more.
