What to expect

Visit North Holland in April and May to experience the magnificent colours and powerful perfume of its famous spring tulips and hyacinths. Look forward to leisurely cycling as you pedal along tulip-lined pathways and green riverbanks on this easy four day tour. Riding through typical Dutch landscapes of narrow dykes and polders, you’ll cycle past flower-filled fields and the only dyke in the world that’s registered as a national monument.

Quiet coast paths and peaceful green meadows make this a tranquil trip and you’ll pass traditional farmhouses, windmills and flocks of geese. A night in the city of Edam is a good excuse to try the region’s famous cheese and you have the choice of either taking a break from your bike and visiting the canals and world-class museums in Amsterdam, or riding to the 17th century mills and warehouses of one of Europe’s oldest industrial areas.

The Trip

  • Day 1: Arrive Schagen

Make your way to Schagen and take a tour of the castle, tower and market in this historic city. For those arriving by midday, ask us about an optional afternoon cycle ride through the spectacular tulip fields north of Schagen.

  • Day 2: Schagen and dunes 27/29 miles (43/47 km)

Cycle over a 10th century dyke – the only dyke in the world that's registered as a national monument. Enter Schoorlse Duinen National Park and visit the Netherlands' widest and highest dune area. Ride next to the North Sea on a beautiful track that passes characteristic dykes. Return to Schagen along small cycle paths and quiet roads through the bulbfields.

  • Day 3: Schagen - Edam 37 miles (59 km)

Ride east into typical Dutch polder landscapes and cycle over narrow dykes past historic mills and traditional Dutch farmhouses to reach the world-famous tulip fields at Opmeer. Arrive in the pretty cheese city of Edam.

  • Day 4: Amsterdam or Zaanse Schans 0/35 miles (0/57 km)

Choose between two trips: A day excursion to Amsterdam by bus, for a guided canal tour through Amsterdam and visit to the Rijksmuseum, Vincent van Gogh museum and Anne Frank’s House; or a 60km round trip cycle ride to the 17th-century Zaanse Schans open air museum and tourist attraction, to see the cheese and clog-makers at work and experience working mills and traditional wooden houses.

  • Day 5: Depart from Edam

Check out after breakfast and make your way home from Edam or extend your stay in Holland.
