Overview

What to expect

Join modern-day pilgrims on the last 167 miles of the Camino de Santiago, riding from the Gothic architecture of Astorga to the golden spires of Santiago de la Compostela – people have travelled this route since medieval times to visit the burial site of St James, one of the Twelve Apostles. Undulating tracks and ascents are balanced with relaxed cycling along quiet lanes and you’ll stay in atmospheric hotels close to the trail.

Riding through miles of unspoilt scenery, you’ll begin in the Mountains of Leon, before entering the gastronomic region of Galicia, with its green hills, sloping farmland and sleepy villages – perfect places to stop for a slice of almond cake or to try the local favourite of octopus with olive oil. When you reach the gilded interior and enormous incense burner of the Cathedral of Santiago on the final day, spare a thought for the thousands of pilgrims who’ve walked for weeks to arrive here over the centuries.

  • Green mountains, sloping farmland and miles of unspoilt rural scenery
  • Follow an ancient pilgrimage route to the Cathedral of Santiago
  • Hilltop villages, spiritual landmarks and delicious local cuisine
  • Undulating trails balanced with relaxed cycling on quiet paths

The Trip

Route

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive in Astorga

Arrive in the bustling town of Astorga and take a stroll to the Gothic cathedral and Neogothical Episcopal Palace, designed by Antonio Gaudí.

  • Day 2: Astorga - Molinaseca 30 miles (49 km)

Climb slowly towards the green slopes and rocky peaks of the Mountains of Leon, heading for the iron cross of Monte de la Cruz, which sits 1510 meters above sea level. Continue downhill to the pretty village of Molinaseca.

  • Day 3: Molinaseca - O´Cebreiro 36 miles (58 km)

Start off with a flat ride before climbing to the beautiful town of Villafranca and continuing to 1300 meters above sea level for magnificent views across green valleys and wooded mountainsides. Cycle to the tiny village of O´Cebreiro, perched on a hilltop with astounding views.

  • Day 4: O´Cebreiro - Sarria 27 miles (44 km)

Enter Galicia and notice a distinct change in the landscape, culture, gastronomy and language. Cycle past forested green hills, sloping farmland and sleepy villages, descending away from the mountains to reach Samos and one of the oldest and most beautiful monasteries in Spain. Continue across undulating terrain to the town of Sarria – the most important service stop along the route.

  • Day 5: Sarria - Palas de Rei 30 miles (48 km)

Ride through the rural Galician countryside along tree-lined roads, lanes and pathways, stopping off in small villages along the way. Arrive in Palais de Rei, a small town full of the pilgrim spirit.

  • Day 6: Palas de Rei - Rua 37 miles (60 km)

Cycle across undulating terrain to reach the town of La Rua, stopping off when you ride through Melide to try the famous local octopus dish.

  • Day 7: Rua - Santiago de Compostela 17 miles (27 km)

Finish with a short ride and a few climbs to reach Mont de Gozo and the beautiful medieval city of Santiago de Compostela. Spend the afternoon in authentic taverns, exploring the old town and joining pilgrims at the city’s stunning cathedral.

  • Day 8: Depart from Santiago de Compostela or extend your cycling holiday

Start making your way home after breakfast

or continue your adventure on to the Finisterre, the most westerly point on the Spanish mainland with an optional extention (please see below).

    Santiago - Olveiroa - 32 miles (52km)

As you leave Santiago, you will cycle onwards through the untamed Galicia along the path to Finistere. Ahead lies country lanes and beautiful forest pathways, however bars and cafes are not so frequent here, so be sure to be more self sufficient.

  • Day 9: Olveiroa - Finnistere 21 miles (34km)

The final days cycling takes you along the high moors through to the town of Finnistere. However, your journey isn't complete until you reach the Cape and lighthouse at the most westerly point on the Spanish mainland. From here you can relax and soak in the immensity that is the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Day 10: Depart from Finisterre or extend your stay in Santiago
