Overview

What to expect

Start in the beautiful city of Stockholm with its colourful architecture and unique history, before discovering tranquil nature reserves, evergreen forests and charming Swedish villages on this family-orientated tour. The cycling on this route is on quiet roads and forest tracks, which are undulating in parts, making this tour suitable for children 11 years and above with cycling experience.

Stop along the way for relaxing picnics or a swim in the clear Baltic waters or many beautiful lakes. Alternatively, opt for a different view of the endless islands from a canoe! Throughout the tour, there are chances to visit a 400-year-old castle, historic manor houses and explore small, pretty towns with winding, narrow streets and wooden houses. Sailing back from Mariefred to Stockholm across Lake Malaren on a steamer built in 1903 is a perfect end to this unique and beautiful tour.

If you are looking for a version of this tour with longer rides, please see our Land of Lakes & Castles tour.

  • Castles, steam trains and lake swimming
  • Beautiful forests and traditional Swedish towns
  • Undulating cycling suitable for older children

The Trip

Route

Itinerary

  • Day 1 (Tue): Arrive in Stockholm

Make your way to Stockholm, one of the best preserved medieval cities in the world.

  • Day 2 (Wed): Stockholm – Trosa 29 miles (46 km)

Take your personal transfer to Stendörren, a beautiful collection of islands due to their tranquillity and unspoilt nature. Swim in the clear Baltic waters or explore the islands using their intriguing suspension bridges before cycling along country lanes and through forests, meadows and lakes. Visit the impressive 17th century Nynäs Manor House before continuing to the seaside town of Trosa known affectionately as the “End of the World” due to its expanse of ocean views.

  • Day 3 (Thu): Trosa - Tullgarn Palace - Gnesta (29 miles/ 46 km)

Explore the 17th century town of Trosa before cycling to the 18th century royal Tullgarn Palace on the Baltic Sea. Continue through pine forests, sparkling lakes and green fields onto Gnesta where you can enjoy the beautiful views from your local farmhouse with shared facilities.

  • Day 4 (Fri): Gnesta - Klämmingen & Marviken Lakes - Mariefred 34 miles (54km)

Cycle along the shores of Lake Klämmingen to the small village of Laxne where you have the option to continue by canoe through the narrow Marviken lake system to Åkers Styckebruk. Or you can cycle to Mariefred with its narrow, winding streets and where the magnificent Castel Gripsholm is.

  • Day 5 (Sat): Mariefred - Stockholm 20 miles (32 km)

Choose to visit Mariefred’s 400 year old red-brick Gripsholm fortress (which you may recognise if you own any Abba albums!) and learn about Swedish royal history or cycle through green fields and past more stunning lakes to Taxinge Manor House famous for its delightful cakes. Return either by bike or let the narrow-gauge steam train take the strain back to the quayside. In the afternoon take a three and a half hour ride on a steamboat that has been in operation since 1903 back to Stockholm.

  • Day 6 (Sun): Depart from Stockholm

Check out after breakfast or extend your stay to experience more of Stockholm with the option of keeping your bike to explore Stockholm's unique Ecopark - the world's first National Park within a city.
