Overview

What to expect

Cycle between two world-famous Austrian cities, from the beautiful alpine surroundings of Innsbruck to the elegant streets of Salzburg. Most of the easy cycling on this tour takes place on dedicated cycle routes along valley floors and riverside paths, where you can stop to admire the breathtaking scenery of the snow-covered mountains. Cycle through the pretty Ziller valley and visit Europe’s highest waterfall at Krimml, continue along the River Salzach, stopping in Zell am See for a refreshing swim in the lake.

Pedal north and reach an Ice Age gorge and one of Europe's largest cave systems near Lofer, before crossing into Germany and Bavaria's National Park of Berchtesgaden. The final ride of this tour takes you through flowering meadows, made famous by The Sound of Music, before you reach Salzburg where the storybook old town still looks much the same as when Mozart lived there 250 years ago.

  • Spectacular waterfalls, ancient cave systems and sparkling lakes
  • Elegant cities, mountain towns and medieval villages
  • Mozart's birthplace in Salzburg
  • Dedicated cycle routes along valley floors and riverside paths

The Trip

Route

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive in Innsbruck

Arrive in Innsbruck, capital of the Tyrol, to explore the narrow, cobbled streets and admire the famous gilded roof. If you have time, take the Nordkette funicular up to over 2000m for a birdseye view of this beautiful city.

  • Day 2: Innsbruck – Strass/Ziller Valley 31 miles (50 km)

With the Alps on one side and the Karwendel mountains the other, cycle along the wide valley of the Inn River to the old town of Hall with its rich minting heritage. Continue to Wattens, home to Swarovski Crystal World. Cycle onwards along easy going cycle paths to the medieval town of Schwaz where beautiful facades date back to the heyday of silver mining. Visit the mine before continuing to the pretty alpine village of Strass at the entrance to the Ziller valley.

  • Day 3: Strass/Ziller Valley – Krimml 16-28 miles (25–45 km) + transfer

Ride along an easy cycle path, past alpine pastures whilst enjoying impressive views of the Zillertal mountain range, with its 3000m peaks. Ride to Zell or further along to Mayrhofen. In the early afternoon, transfer by bus over the Gerlos Pass to Krimml, and admire the panoramic views of the valley and Europe’s highest waterfall before visiting them on foot.

  • Day 4: Krimml – Kaprun/Zell am See 37 miles (60 km)

Today you will follow the Salzach river valley almost from the source. Again, you'll have views of the astounding mountain ranges on both sides of the wide valley. You'll ride into the National Park of Hohe Tauern, where the information centre is well worth a visit. The day's route ends in Zell am See by a beautiful lake, with a view of the highest mountain in Austria, the Großglockner.

  • Day 5: Kaprun/Zell am See – Lofer 31 miles (50 km)

Take a refreshing dip in Zell Lake before following the Saalach river past Saalfelden to Maria Alm with its pretty pilgrimage church and backdrop of the Steinernes Meer mountains. Continue to Lofer and stop off to visit the impressive 600m Seisenberg gorge carved in the Ice Age and the Lamprechts caves, one of the largest cave systems in Europe, near Weißbach.

  • Day 6: Lofer – Salzburg 31 miles (50 km)

Following the river bank, cross into the National Park of Berchtesgaden in Bavaria, Germany, and visit the spa town of Bad Reichenhall. Visit the old salt mine, have a break in the old town, or taste the beer in the brewery. Pedal through meadows to reach Salzburg. Sound of Music fans will recognise the castle and lake where part of the filming of the original movie took place.

  • Day 7: Depart from Salzburg

Check out after breakfast and make your way home or continue your holiday.

Cycling from Innsbruck to Salzburg was everything I'd wished for. Easy cycling, well signposted and the distance just right so that you knew you'd been out for a bike ride, but were ready for more the next day. The scenery was fantastic - most of the cycling was along rivers/through valleys with an ever changing view of the surrounding mountains. There was plenty to see/do on the way - do go to the Krimml waterfalls - , and there were scenic spots for a break/lunch. The hotels were excellent - welcoming and comfortable.
