What to expect

See the best of Belgium’s waterside towns and cities, as you tour along towpaths and clear cycle routes from Brussels to Bruges – this easy-going trip is ideal for families and follows flat terrain. The art galleries and ornate Guild Houses of Brussels make a fitting start to this rich cultural tour and pedalling into Bruges on the last day is a real highlight. In Ghent you’ll see one of the world’s most magnificent oil paintings and the cathedral at Antwerp is worth the detour on day three.

When you reach the coast, brave a dip in the North Sea, stretch out on the sand, or do as the Belgians do and pick your way through a beer menu and a bowl of mussels. When you reach the beautiful medieval city of Bruges, look forward to immersing yourself in the cafe culture and working your way through the canalside chocolate shops.

  • Belgium’s stunning cities of Brussels, Bruges and Ghent
  • Cobbled streets and cafe culture, astonishing artwork and Guild Houses
  • Easy cycling between cities along canal paths and by the coast

The Trip

  • Day 1: Arrive in Brussels

Begin your holiday in the pulsating city of Brussels. Visit the historic market square to see the city’s splendid Guild Houses and Gothic town hall.

  • Day 2: Brussels - Mechelen 41 miles (65km)

Cycle to the city of Leuven, home to Belgium’s oldest university and a magnificent 15th century town hall. Spend your evening in the riverside city of Mechelen and visit the impressive St Rombouts cathedral.

  • Day 3: Mechelen - Bornem 19 miles (30km)

Enjoy an easy riverside ride to Bornem and cycle past the castles, forts, art galleries and museums of this seemingly quiet town. Take the 15-minute train ride to Antwerp for a stroll along the Meir and enjoy a Belgian beer or cold drink in one of the Flemish capital’s many plazas.

  • Day 4: Bornem - Ghent 40 miles (64km)

Cycle to Ghent and discover the city’s magnificent oil painting, historic centre, stunning cathedral and skyline of towers. Visit the ancient port and stop by at the medieval castle.

  • Day 5: Ghent - Bruges 32 miles (52km)

Explore the parks, bars and chocolate shops of Bruges. Take a stroll around the city’s cobbled streets, visit the 13th century market square and relax with a drink in a canalside bar.

  • Day 6: Bruges - De Haan - Bruges 34 miles (55km)

Ride alongside canals to the picturesque village of Lissewege and on to the authentic coastal village of De Haan. Cool off with a dip in the North Sea or stretch out on the sandy beach. If you’d prefer a day off, spend more time in Bruges, sightseeing by carriage or taking a boat ride down the canal.

  • Day 7: Depart from Bruges

Depart after breakfast for the one-hour train ride back to Brussels. To extend your holiday, stay an extra night in Bruges or Brussels.

This was a lovely easy cycle through delightful Flanders countryside. We were astonished at the beauty of the towns and cities en route; we had no idea that Belgium boasted so many hidden gems.
