Overview

What to expect

Fresh Nordic air, gentle terrain and sun-drenched days make the peaceful Turku archipelago perfect for a summer cycle tour. More than 20,000 small islands stretch out across calm waters and regular ferries make travelling between them easy. Starting and finishing in Finland’s oldest town of Turku, follow a circular route around the main islands, resting your legs between rides with scenic cruises.

From glistening bays and wooden boathouses, to pine trees and barren shorelines, each island has unique appeal. As you tour sandy beaches and craggy coasts, stop off at art galleries, wooden churches and waterside cafes. If you’re craving mainland culture try the castle and sophisticated riverboat restaurants of Turku town or, for unadulterated island peace, watching the midnight sun reflect across the water is hard to beat.

  • Blue skies, pristine islands and long summer days
  • Riverboat restaurants and a medieval castle in Finland’s oldest city
  • Maritime culture, local handicrafts and fresh, healthy cuisine
  • Idyllic island cycling with ferry rides in-between

The Trip

Route

Itinerary

  • Day 1 (Sun): Arrive in Turku

Make your way to Turku, Finland’s oldest city and soak up its magical atmosphere as you stroll along the Aura River between the cathedral and castle, stopping off at waterside cafes and riverboat restaurants on route.

  • Day 2 (Mon): Turku - Kustavi 42 miles (68 km)

Ride north-west into the countryside and start island-hopping with a scenic 45 minute ferry journey to the area of western Finland. Dinner and overnight in Kustavi where you will stay in thatched cabins on the harbourside.

  • Day 3 (Tue): Kustavi - Korppoo 21 miles (34 km)

A full day of island hopping, five short ferry journeys take you into the heart of the archipelago.  Houtskär Island has some of the region’s most challenging cycling and the peaceful island of Iniö is the most remote of the trip. End your day on Korpoo island with dinner and overnight in a former barn converted turned guest house.

  • Day 4 (Wed): Korppoo - rest day or cycle various cycle routes

Free day to cycle at your leisure. Cross over to Nauvo, the main archipelago island, and visit the bustling harbour in Nauvo village to taste some of the island’s delicious cuisine of fresh fish, potatoes and liqueurs or spend the day exploring Korppoo island on your bike. Overnight on Korppoo island on bed & breakfast.

  • Day 5 (Thu): Korppoo - Naantali 35 miles (57 km)

Cross over to Nauvo, the main archipelago island, with its bustling harbour. Take the ferry back to the mainland and continue by bike to Naantali, an idyllic harbour-side village with cobbled streets and old wooden houses. Overnight in a spa hotel, with plenty of local restaurants to choose from for dinner.

  • Day 6 (Fri): Naantali - Turku 9 miles (14 km)

Cycle back to Turku and explore this historic city, stepping inside its famous museum ships or relaxing in the sun with a coffee and enjoying the fresh Nordic air.

  • Day 7 (Sat): Depart from Turku

Check out after a final breakfast and continue your adventure in Finland or make your way home.

Our family really enjoyed the combination of cycling and ferry travel in this stunning part of the world. The route was well chosen through woods, farmland and coastal paths (as well as cycling paths by main roads). Distances and gradients were more challenging on some days than others. Accommodation was charmingly diverse and food, where provided, was very good. Highly recommended.

A great cycling location. Could have done with some better bikes and maps though!
