The Trip

Route

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive in Regensburg

Discover Regensburg, Germany's best preserved city and the most northerly point of the Danube. Stroll around this UNESCO World Heritage site, walking through the winding lanes of the Spital quarter.

  • Day 2: Regensburg - Straubing 31 miles (50 km)

Follow the "Tour de Baroque" cycle route to Donaustauf and see in the distance the famous Walhalla across the Danube Valley. Continue along the Danube as it meanders across expansive plains, pass Wörth Castle and pedal through the heart of the flat Gäuboden landscape. Arrive in Straubing, a town with Celtic and Roman roots and home to an impressive tower.

  • Day 3: Straubing - Deggendorf 25 miles (40 km)

Cycle through the town of Bogen, an ancient pilgrimage site. Continue on through typical Bavarian landscapes to the Benedictine monastery of Metten, with its library and the prominent Baroque church. Reach Deggendorf at the gateway to the Bavarian forest and spend a night in the old town.

  • Day 4: Deggendorf - Passau 37 miles (60 km)

Tour past the convent of Niederaltaich, one of the oldest Benedictine Monasteries in Bavaria and site of fifteen fires in the past. Continue to the historic village of Vilshofen, famous for the Ash Wednesday talks. Reach the river-town of Passau and explore the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers by boat, before strolling through the old town.

  • Day 5: Depart from Passau

Start making your way home after breakfast or extend your tour along the Danube, by cycling from Passau to Vienna.

It’s one of the best holidays we had! The operation was smooth and we were well advised. The bikes and hotels were top quality and luggage transfer was great. The routes were absolutely ideal for first time family cycling with children. The stopping towns and city are beautiful! We came back happy and looking forward to next one!

Great trip through lovely countryside and interesting towns. Super hotels, good bikes and very well organised and supported by Freedom Treks and the local company. Overall very satisfied, with a couple of minor niggles. The hotel in Regensburg was beautiful (nice town too) and the market town of Staubing was wonderful. The Monastery at Metten is stunning too and the Bavarian people are very friendly.
