What to expect

This relaxing cycling holiday lets you discover the towns, islands and natural beauty of one of Europe’s largest freshwater lakes at your own pace. Based in the waterside city of Constance, you’ll explore both the Obsersee (Upper) and Untersee (Lower) sections of Lake Constance, setting-off on leisurely daily rides through Germany and Switzerland, and returning to your hotel each evening by bike or boat.

Riding beside the lake on flat, well-marked paths, you’ll pedal past meadows and wetlands, passing mighty monasteries and medieval castles – the abbey at Salem is one of the most important heritage sites in the region, and Wasserberg Castle gives jaw-dropping views of the Swiss and Austrian Alps. You’ll also experience the Bavarian streets of Lindau, the medieval town of Stein am Rhein and the striking beauty of Mainau – home to thousand of flowers, this island also boasts a baroque palace and Germany’s biggest butterfly house.

  • Five nights in a 3* Constance hotel
  • Salem Abbey, Wasserburg Castle and medieval Stein am Rhein
  • Two country tour of Germany and Switzerland
  • Well-marked lakeside paths with leisurely cycling for all abilities

The Trip

  • Day 1 (Sun): Arrive in Constance

Make your way to your hotel in Constance. The largest city on the lake, start your holiday with a drink in the historic centre, then visit the excellent Rosgarten Museum which reveals the lake’s history from the stone age to the present day.

  • Day 2 (Mon): Lindau 31 miles (50 km) plus ferry

Take a ferry across the lake to Meersburg – built on a steep vineyard, this town is perfect for a scenic coffee break. Cycle to the modern city of Friedrichshafen, then continue to Wasserburg Castle and the wine town of Nonnenhorn. When you arrive in Lindau, enjoy a drink in a lakefront café and take in the Alpine views. Return to Constance by boat (journey approx. 3-3.5 hours)

  • Day 3 (Tue): Mainau Island 9 miles (15 km)

Easily reached by bike from your hotel, spend a relaxing day cycling and strolling around the flower island of Mainau. Visit the palm house, butterfly garden and 13th century baroque palace, stopping for coffee in a local café.

  • Day 4 (Wed): Überlingen and Salem 34 miles (55 km) plus ferry

Cycle from Constance to Wallhausen and take a boat to the health resort of Überlingen, home to a late-Gothic style cathedral. Continue along the lakeshore, past Birnau minster and take the historic Prälatenweg route to Salem’s Cistercian abbey. Ride to Meersburg and catch the ferry back to Constance.

  • Day 5 (Thu): Untersee and Stein am Rhein 31 miles (50 km) plus ferry

Explore the Untersee (lower) section of Lake Constance, riding to Reichenau island and taking a boat to Gaienhofen. Cycle along the pretty Höri Peninsula and cross the River Rhine to the fairytale town of Stein am Rhein. Return to Constance along the southern shore, via the Swiss towns of Steckborn and Gottlieben.

  • Day 6 (Fri): Depart from Constance

Check out after breakfast and make your way home from Constance.

The itinerary worked well for us providing a good mix of rides and we left feeling we had got to know Bodensee well. We very much enjoyed our 5 days on the tandem. Beware of the trip to Salem this is quite challenging even for reasonably experienced cyclists.

This was a fantastic holiday. From the first phone call to Freedom Treks to the end of the holiday everything was dealt with efficiently. All Freedom Treks staff handled any enquiries effectively and pleasantly. Nothing was too much trouble for them. In Constance the hotel was comfortable, clean and very well situated for the start of each cycle trip. The food was good and the staff were all very approachable. The quality of the rental bikes was excellent. The information provided by the local partner was professionally produced, very helpful and made the routes easy to follow. I would definitely recommend this trip and would definitely deal with Freedom Treks again.
