What to expect

Surrounded by lush scenery and wooded hills, Passau sits at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers. One of Germany’s most beautiful cities, with the Danube and Inn cycle paths leading out to the countryside, it makes a perfect base for this leisurely cycle break. A flexible itinerary allows you to pick and choose between different daily routes, using local ferries to cross the river or return to Passau by boat.

The dramatic beauty of the Danube Loop is one of the highlights and, as you pedal towards the two castles at Werstein, you’ll zigzag across the German-Austrian border. Engelszell Abbey and the Benedictine monastery at Schweiklberg are two more of the area’s striking landmarks and, if you fancy a rest day, the pretty old town and enormous cathedral organ in Passau are not to be missed.

  • Based in one centrally located hotel in Passau
  • Bavarian Forest, lush countryside and dramatic Danube Loop
  • Werstein’s castles, Schweiklberg abbey and Engelszell monastery
  • Flexible itinerary with four easy cycle routes

The Trip

  • Day 1: Arrive in Passau

There are four easy cycle tours to choose from. Here is a suggested itinerary or you can choose your own from the routes provided.

Make your way to Passau and check-in to your hotel. Explore the old town, which sits on the Austrian border at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers. If you arrive early enough, listen to a midday organ concert in the baroque St Stephen's Cathedral (except Sundays and public holidays), played on one of the world's largest church organs.

  • Day 2: Danube Loop 22 miles (35 km)

Take an early morning boat ride through the Upper Danube Valley to the famous Danube Loop, where the river bends 180 degrees. Spend the rest of your day cycling past wooded hillsides, scattered with villages and traditional taverns. Use local ferries to cross between the banks, then return to Passau by boat.

  • Day 3: Inn Cycle Path to Schärding 21 miles (33 km)

Follow the River Inn out of Passau, zigzagging across the Austria-Germany border. Ride through the fertile Sauwald region to the riverside town of Wernstein, which is overlooked by the Neuburg and Werstein castles. Continue to Schärding, with its colourful houses and cobbled streets.

  • Day 4: Ancient Bavarian route to Engelszell Abbey 34 miles (54 km)

Ride along the Danube Cycle Path, passing through open countryside and Obernzell Castle. Experience the water-powered elevator at the Haus am Strom (Environment Adventure House), then take a ferry to Engelszell Abbey – Austria’s only Trappist monastery. Cycle back to Passau on the opposite riverbank.

    Alternative option:

Danube Cycle Path to Schweiklberg Monastery  31 miles (50 km)

Follow the Danube Cycle path through the southern part of the Bavarian Forest. Arrive at the ‘Small Three River City’ of Vilshofen, where the Vilshofen and Wolfach rivers merge with the Danube. Visit the city’s Benedictine monastery and try the Schweiklberg herbal liqueur before cycling back to Passau.

  • Day 5: Depart from Passau

Check out of your hotel after breakfast and make your way home.

Lovely doing a tour from one hotel as you could come and go as you pleased and knew what to expect when you got back. Also, if weather is really bad you could choose to do something less wet.

I would thoroughly recommend the 4 day 3 rivers tour as a starter cycling holiday for all ages. The scenery is lovely, the terrain mainly level and there are interesting villages along the routes. Freedom Treks made it possible to relax, knowing that each day would be fun and interesting and that help and advice was available if needed
