Overview

What to expect

Ride around the heart of Holland and discover the charming cities, iconic canals and beautiful landscapes of this cycling haven. Your tour will start with a ride to Amsterdam, cycling along river-bank paths lined with grand houses built in the 17/18th centuries. Arriving in Amsterdam, you’ll have time to explore the art galleries, museums and historic canals.

You’ll pedal out of the Dutch capital, along the river Vecht which is lined by grand stately homes and well-kept gardens. From here you'll ride into a  beautifully green and rural landscape with charming little towns surrounded by meadows, rivers and woodland. Staying in cities including Gouda and Utrecht, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy typical Dutch markets, museums and churches.

  • The rural beauty of Holland's polders, meadows and rivers
  • Charming towns and fascinating cities of Utrecht, Amsterdam and Gouda
  • Flat cycling terrain through the Dutch countryside

The Trip

Route

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival in Utrecht

Make your way to the city of Utrecht, Holland’s most important city in the Golden Dutch Age.  Explore the medieval streets and canals, stopping for a drink at one of its charming canal-level cafes. If you have the time (and energy), climb the 465 steps up the narrow stairwell of the 14th-century bell tower for amazing views of the city and, if it’s a clear day, as far as Amsterdam!

  • Day 2: Utrecht – Amsterdam 39 miles (63 km)

Pedal along the winding banks of the River Vecht passing stately homes built as summer retreats by rich Amsterdam merchants in the 17th and 18th centuries. Reach the bicycle friendly city of Amsterdam, where there are said to be more bikes than inhabitants, and check in to your hotel. Visit Anne Frank’s House, the Van Gogh Museum or Rijksmuseum with masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

  • Day 3: Amsterdam – Gouda 50 miles (80 km)

Ride through Holland’s rural ‘Green Heart’ stopping off at characteristic old Dutch towns and villages before reaching the cheese town of Gouda. Arriving in Gouda you can wander around the inner city canals or see the beautiful 16th-century stained-glass windows in the town’s church.

If you want to see the traditional morning cheese market in Gouda on day 4 , you will need to start your tour on Monday.

You can also split this day into two shorter cycle days (30 km and 49 km) by adding an extra night in Woerden and starting your tour on Sunday.

  • Day 4: Gouda – Utrecht 42 miles (67 km)

Cycle through a wonderful landscape of lakes, rivers, polders, woods and marshy fens. Arriving in Utrecht, explore the pretty Museum Quarter, the canals and historic wharves of the city centre.

  • Day 5: Depart from Utrecht

Check out after breakfast and make your way home.

Absolutely beautiful Country and people. Amazing houses along the route, beautiful scenery. Wish the maps had been clearer but it didn't spoil our enjoyment.
