Overview

What to expect

Pristine beaches, offshore islands and historic towns – Sardinia’s southern coast is an idyllic place for a cycling break. Designed specifically for families, this gentle tour involves shorter distances, with the option to hire trailers and kids’ seats. Your holiday begins on Sant’Antioco – a tiny island connected to Sardinia via a causeway. From here, ride to the beach or take a ferry to neighbouring San Pietro island.

You’ll spend the rest of the week in southern Sardinia, pedalling through vineyards and olive groves of the Sulcis Plains, and exploring Chia’s pristine coves – with their apricot-coloured sands and turquoise waters, Malfatano and Campana beaches are particularly good for families. To reduce the time spent packing and unpacking, you’ll spend a couple of nights in most locations, including Sardinia’s prettiest town of Pula with its charming old town and alleyways.

  • Easy cycle rides with shorter distances tailored to families
  • Beautiful islands of Sant’Antioco and San Pietro
  • Peaceful Sucis Plains and the pretty town of Pula
  • Idyllic Chia beaches with turquoise waters and pale sands

The Trip

Route

Itinerary

  • Day 1 (Sat): Arrive in Sant’Antioco

Take a transfer from the airport, or make your own way to your hotel on Sant’Antioco – an island which connects to Sardinia’s southwest corner via a mile-long causeway

  • Day 2 (Sun): Carloforte (San Pietro) or Maladroxia (Sant’Antioco) 15 miles (24km); or 12 miles (20km)

Today you can either cycle to Maladroxia beach (famous for its turquoise waters) or take the ferry to San Pietro island – here, you can cycle to the fishing village of Carloforte, then continue to the lagoons with their pink flamingos and beaches. Spend the night on Sant’Antioco.

  • Day 3 (Mon): Plains of Sulcis 16 miles (25 km)

Cycle through vineyards and olive groves as you tour southern Sardinia’s peaceful Sulcis region. Visit the little town of Tratalias, where the Pisan sanctuary is one of the most important monuments of the Sardinian Romanesque period. Overnight in/near Porto Pino.

  • Day 4 (Tue): The South Coast 22 miles (36 km)

Ride along Sardinia’s beautiful Costa del Sud (south coast), passing white-sand beaches and imposing cliffs. The bay at Cape Malfatano is a picturesque place to stop for a dip, and you’ll tour past the lighthouse at Cape Spartivento before arriving at Chia’s famous beaches. Overnight in Chia.

  • Day 5 (Wed): Chia discover day (optional rest day)

Spend a full day enjoying Chia’s beaches – Cala Cipolla, Su Giudeu and Campana are particularly special. Alternatively, you could hike along the old Roman road above Sa Colonia beach and Cala dei Pini. Overnight in Chia.

  • Day 6 (Thu): Chia – Pula 14 miles (23 km)

Enjoy a short ride to the pretty town of Pula, stopping for a dip in the shallow waters at Santa Margherita beach. Overnight in Pula

  • Day 7 (Fri): Pula discover day 12 miles (20km)

Finish your holiday with an optional cycle loop through Pula’s surrounding countryside, or head straight to the family-friendly beach and Phoenician ruins at Nora – once one of Sardinia’s most powerful cities. Overnight in Pula

  • Day 8 (Sat): Depart from Pula

Enjoy a final breakfast before making your way home.
