What to expect

Pre-Roman ruins are scattered liberally across Sardinia but the island’s pristine beaches are its biggest selling point – and South West Sardinia's shoreline has some of the best. Abandoned mines and some of Europe’s tallest sand dunes are just some of the highlights to expect as you tour between hidden coves, passing juniper woods and sheer cliffs. You’ll ride along gentle coastal paths, pedal out to see pink flamingos on the Sinis Peninsula and hop on a ferry to experience the turquoise surf and tuna fishermen of Carloforte island.

The ruins of Tharros and the famous pre-Roman settlement at Nora are two of the main historic attractions and the rolling hills of Costa Verde are fringed by vast beaches and ancient sites. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to authentic fishing villages for a gelato or espresso stop and you’ll be tempted to plunge into the sea or stretch out on the sand at every idyllic beach you ride past.

Please Note: the grading of this tour is based on the hardest day and not the tour as a whole, which is a mix of challenging days, moderate days, and easier days.

If you prefer a more relaxing tour, choose the guided South West Sardinia option and back-up of a support vehicle.

  • Pink flamingos, turquoise surf, golden beaches
  • Pre-Roman ruins, abandoned mines and thriving fishing towns
  • Pristine sands, hidden coves, vineyards and dramatic cliffs
  • Cycling along coastal paths with gelato and espresso stops

The Trip

  • Day 1 (Sat): Arrive in San Salvatore Sinis/ Cabra

Make your way to San Salvatore Sinis or Cabras.

  • Day 2 (Sun): Sinis Peninsula 33 miles (52 km)

Travel through the fascinating Sinis wetlands where colonies of pink flamingos gather. Continue to the white sands and blue waters of Arutas Beach and the ruins of Tharros – an ancient Phoenician-Roman Port that sits on a finger of land.

  • Day 3 (Mon): The Sinis Peninsula - Piscinas - Arbus 29/34 miles (46/54 km)

Transfer to Arborea and cycle through the green landscapes of the Costa Verde, riding past strawberry trees and juniper bushes shaped by the wind. Arrive at Piscinas beach, where its 50 metre sand dunes are some of the highest in Europe.

  • Day 4 (Tue): The mines of Sulcis - Nebida/Gonnesa 26 miles (41 km)

Discover Sardinia’s mining heritage as you cycle to the abandoned mines of Planusartu and Acquaresi. Pass the golden beach of Portixeddu and looming rocky face of the Pan di Zucchero cliff to admire the architecture of the old ore washery at Nebida.

  • Day 5 (Wed): Carloforte and Sant'Antioco - Calasetta 27 miles (43 km)

After a beautiful descent to the beachfront village of Fontanamare, reach the town of Portoscuso and take the ferry to Carloforte, famous for its fresh red tuna. Continue to Sardinia’s second largest island of Sant'Antioco and spend the night in the town of Calasetta.

  • Day 6 (Thu): Sant’Antioco - Tratalias 25 miles (40 km)

Ride through vineyards and olive groves, enjoying the quiet peace of the rolling plains of Sulcis. Visit the Pisan Sanctuary in the town of Tratalias, one of the most important monuments of the Sardinian Romanesque period.

  • Day 7 (Fri): Costa del Sud and Nora 36 miles (57 km)

Cycle along the beautiful Costa del Sud with its gleaming white beaches, unspoilt landscapes and imposing cliffs. Visit a 16th century tower, the historic battle-site at Cape Spartivento and the highpoint of Capo Malfatano. Visit the ruins of the pre-Roman settlement at Nora, thought to be the first town founded in Sardinia.

  • Day 8 (Sat): Depart from Pula

Check out after breakfast and make your way home or continue your holiday in Italy.

Please Note: the grading of this tour is based on the hardest day and not the tour as a whole, which is a mix of challenging days, moderate days, and easier days.

Good trip with ebikes. The hills would have been too much for us on normal tour bikes. Scenery was fantastic. Accommodation was good. Service from local tour agent in Sardinia was excellent.
