What to expect

Explore Umbria’s green heart and medieval hill towns as you tour the region by bike. This relaxing week gives you time to take it all in as you ride through the Umbrian Valley and explore each town on foot. Pedalling to new destinations each day, you’ll discover Assisi’s basilica, Spello’s frescoes, and Romanesque churches in Bevagna. After each day’s cycle ride, you’ll unwind in city centre hotels and rural retreats with swimming pools.

Riding on quiet country lanes and cycle paths, you’ll pedal past fields and hills cloaked in vines, olives and sunflowers. Learn more about this local produce at the 17th century palace in Torigiano - a hilltop town with ancient walls. The fortress town of Spoleto is a stunning place to finish, with its grand arches and amphitheatre. When you arrive, be sure to reward yourself with ice-cream, cappuccinos and local wine.

  • Medieval hill towns and Romanesque churches
  • Fertile valleys, local produce and mountain backdrops
  • Rural guesthouses and city centre hotels
  • Relaxed cycling, with the option of e-bikes

The Trip

  • Day 1: Arrive in Assisi

Arrive in Assisi and transfer to your hotel, four miles (7km) outside the city. Take an optional trip to Assini (transport available), or relax by the hotel pool, which has views of the city. Highlights in Assisi include the famous basilicas, fortress, and Roman forum.

  • Day 2: Round tour to Spello 24 miles (38 km)

Explore the Umbrian Valley, riding downhill on quiet streets to the medieval city of Spello. Walk uphill to see the frescoes in Santa Maria Maggiore church, the Pinacoteca museum, Sant’Andrea church, and the Porta Consolare Roman gate. Return to Assisi by bike, passing sunflowers, vines and olives.

  • Day 3: Assisi - Torgiano 20 miles (32 km)

Pedal to Santa Maria degli Angeli and its famous basilica where Francis of Assisi once lived. Leave your bikes for an optional bus trip to Assisi, returning to collect them later. Continue cycling on quiet country roads to the riverside village of Torgiano, with its 13th century Baglioni Tower and 17th century Graziani Baglioni Palace with wine and olive museums. Sleep in a city-centre hotel.

  • Day 4: Torgiano - Bevagna 17 miles (28 km)

Cycle through the Umbrian countryside to the tiny town of Bevagna. Discover its two Romanesque churches, Roman mosaics, and the Piazza Silvestri with its gothic Palazzo dei Consoli. Stay at a hotel in the historic centre.

  • Day 5: Bevagna - Foligno - Casco dell’Acqua 16 miles (25 km)

Ride to the riverside city of Foligno and visit the Duomo and gothic Palazzo Trinci with archaeology museum. Shop for souvenirs and visit Piazza della Repubblica in the historic centre. Back on your bike, ride past fields and canals to your eco- guesthouse by the Clitunno river. Enjoy a canoe trip or relax by the salt-water pool.

  • Day 6: Casco dell’Acqua - Spoleto 17 miles (28 km)

Spot Spoleto fortress as you cycle towards the city. Follow the bike path to the Porta Garibaldi gates and into the centre, then leave your bikes and explore on foot. Highlights include the Duomo, fortress, Ponte delle Torri (Tower Bridge), Roman house, and amphitheatre. Pedal a short distance to your hotel and relax by the pool or join a pizza making class (additional cost).

  • Day 7: Depart from Spoleto

Check out after breakfast or book an extra night. If you left a car at the first hotel, you can return by train and taxi, or we can arrange a transfer. Please ask for details.
