Cycling history

Cycling and the outdoors are central pillars in my life. I have been lucky enough to cycle through/around many countries - allowing me to see places up close, as a way of travel - to get from A to B, to sightsee, to socialise and explore with others, to commute through the city swiftly, and even to train and race. In short, I use my bike on most days, and it always makes me smile.

Best country to cycle in

Tough one, as there are so many! France or the Netherlands offer great routes, infrastructure, and a culture of cycling, but much of Europe has excellent cycle routes that can be found with enough research and planning (why not allow us to do that!). But SE Asian countries are also a must-see on a bike, given that in some areas this is the most common mode of transport, allowing you to ‘fit in’ with the flow of daily life whilst being highly stimulated with all the sounds, smells, sights, and challenges of unfamiliar surroundings.

Last tour

As a new member of the team, I have not yet experienced one of our excellent tours personally, but I have cycled in many of our hand-picked destinations, having recently spent seven days cycling around Lanzarote and enjoying the challenging hills, wind, and heat. I’d highly recommend this volcanic island on two wheels.

Next tour

That will be decided by my manager! But I’d love to experience a Boat and Bike Tour, perhaps in the popular destination of Croatia, or go to a country that I’ve not been to before - such as Albania - to learn a little about the local culture, cuisine, and enjoy the challenging cycle routes.

Best cycling memory

Upon reflection, a long weekend on the Isle of Wight serves as one of my favourite cycling memories. The reason being, I travelled with a friend who had never done a bike tour before, and it was so wonderful to see them fall in love with this type of holiday, enjoying the freedom, challenge, and satisfaction it brings.

Interesting fact

I used to work with both Cycle Scotland and Sustrans, which has allowed me to take school groups on cycle holiday camps, learn how to become a ride leader, and even build new bike routes in the countryside for fellow bike enthusiasts to enjoy.

Top travel tip

Keep any luggage you need to take with you on your bike frame, not on your body. Often, your comfort is key to your enjoyment, and sitting on your saddle with no backpack or waist-belt enhances your travel and ride experience.
