What to expect

Experience Catalonia, where everything from the language to the landscape is distinctly different to the rest of Spain. A truly diverse region, you’ll pedal past sandy stretches and craggy coasts, green mountains and sheltered forests. Follow easy-going cycle tracks, you can pick a five or seven night escape and choose to arrive in the medieval city of Girona, the Catalan capital of Barcelona or Salvador Dali’s birthplace of Figueres.

As you tour through sleepy hamlets and medieval towns, stop off to try regional red wines and the local staple of bread rubbed with tomatoes, sprinkled with salt and drizzled with olive oil. You’ll ride through typical Catalan countryside, passing vineyards, orchards and olive groves with a backdrop of the Pyrenees. The golden beaches on Catalonia’s wild coast are ideal for a rest day and nature fans can spot pink flamingos and black storks in Aiguamolls Nature Reserve.

  • Monasteries and Gothic churches, Greek & Roman ruins and medieval towns
  • Golden beaches, green olive groves, sparkling rivers and the Pyrenees
  • Pink flamingos and black storks, red wines and rich Catalan stews
  • Cycling based in two properties with optional rest days by the beach or pool

The Trip

  • Day 1: Arrive in Palau Saverdera

Touch down in Girona or arrive at Figueres train station and transfer west to reach Palau Saverdera.

  • Day 2: Palau Saverdera - Peralada 23 miles (36 km)

Ride through beautiful Catalan countryside passing fields of vines and olive groves. Reach the historic town of Peralada and explore its narrow streets and museums, visit St Domènec's cloister and see the impressive castle with its gardens and library. Make your way back to Palau Saverdera via the sleepy hamlets of Pedret and Marza.

  • Day 3: Palau Saverdera - Vilanova de la Muga (7 night only) 24 miles (39 km)

Travel west through the village of Vilaberton, home to the 1069 monastary of Santa Maria. Pass through the hamlet of Vilanova de la Muga and the 11th century Church of Santa Eulàlia de Vilanova before arriving back in Palau Savedera.

  • Day 4: Palau Saverdera - Sant Pere Pescador 17 miles (28 km)

Visit the beautiful medieval village of Castello D’Empuries and cycle through Aiguamolls Natural Park, stopping off at one of the bird hides to spy on flamingos and spoonbills. Continue through the countryside to the riverside village of Sant Pere Pescador, which sits just back from the sea – expect green orchards and golden beaches.

  • Day 5: Sant Pere Pescador (7 night only)

Take a day off and relax on the beach, visit Salvador Dali’s house in Cadaqués, take a trip to the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes or relax by the pool and explore the village.

  • Day 6: River Fluvià and Sant Pere Pescador 23 miles (37 km)

Cycle through beautiful Catalan farming countryside, passing apple orchards and small hamlets, with views across to the high Pyrenees. Ride parallel to the River Fluvià before crossing the water and looping southwards back to San Pere Pescador. Alternatively, enjoy a day with less cycling and spend more time on the beach.

  • Day 7: Sant Pere Pescador - Empúries 24 miles (39 km)

Ride to the walled coastal settlement of Sant Martí d'Empúries before continuing to the Greek and Roman ruins at Empúries (pay locally), a Roman city used as a base for the invasion and dominance of the Iberian Peninsula. See the mosaics and Roman remains, which date back to 218BC. Stop off for a swim on your return to Sant Pere Pescador.

  • Day 8: Depart from Sant Pere Pescador

Transfer back to Girona airport or Figueres Train Station, with the option of booking a night in Girona – a walled city with beautiful 19th century houses, Roman ruins, a charming Jewish quarter and magnificent cathedral. Alternatively, fly back from Barcelona and spend an additional night here.

A great holiday, fun for my 50th birthday!

We went on this holiday in the middle of November and had fantastic weather. A bit cold in the mornings but then bright and sunny. The local operator was fantastic, his explanations were very detailed and was always reachable if needed. Everything was well thought out and the country hotels were really nice and just to our taste. Some of the routes a bit bumpy but the bikes were very sturdy and stood up to anything we threw at them! Catherine at Freedom treks sorted this holiday out for us with very short notice so a big thanks to all involved and can definitely recommend them and the holiday.
