What to expect
Discover a lesser-visited area of Spain as you ride past foothills and green valleys, touring between mountain villages and hilltop towns. Some sections are more demanding than others but getting off to push is always allowed! The city of Cordoba makes a magnificent starting point and it’s worth arriving early to visit the world famous mosque or sample some local wines in its authentic cellars.
As you tour through rural villages, olive groves and historic cities, stop off to taste authentic tapas and fresh cheeses. Expect 13th century churches, magnificent fortresses and spectacular views across fertile plains and rolling vineyards. The castle at Alcalá la Real is a highlight and the white-washed houses of Zuheros village are typical of the region. Arriving in Granada is a great way to end the week, and you’ll have a full day here to visit the spectacular Alhambra fortress or reward yourself with a banquet of garlic prawns, stuffed peppers and Spanish omelette.

Arrive in Cordoba

Cordoba - Priego
16 miles (26km)
Take the bus to Luque (payable locally, approx 9€), on the edge of the Sierras Subbéticas natural park, and cycle from here along quiet country lanes through the mountains, passing typical villages. Arrive in the charming town of Priego, known for its 13th century church and beautiful views.
Priego - Zuheros
34 miles (54 km)
Cycle to the castle and pretty town of Carcabuey before touring past the village of Algar and climbing to the Gaena mountain pass. Enjoy a long descent to the splendid town of Cabra and take the Vía Verde (a disused railway line) to the romantic village of Zuheros.
Zuheros - Alcalá la Real
38 miles (60 km)
Ride from the Subbetica mountains, cycling through the rolling countryside of Jaén province on the Vía Verde. Enter Nasrid territory, a region of outstanding architecture, and visit the majestic La Mota fortress, which defends the town of Alcalá.
If you prefer, take today at a more leisurely pace with a taxi from Alcaudete to Alcalá - the taxi will leave at a scheduled time and is included in the tour (a supplement will apply if you arrive later than the pre-arranged time or require the taxi for a different time).
Alcalá la Real - Tózar
18 miles (28 km)
Pedal across fertile plains between fields of cereal crops which are packed with poppies in springtime. See the landscape change as you head towards the town of Tózar, beneath the watchful eye of its imposing castle.
Tózar - Granada
33/39 miles (53/62 km)
Climb to the ancient town of Moclín for great views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Descend to the town of Olivares, approaching Granada from the north, or take a longer route through the foothills of the Alfaguara Mountains or the fertile plain alongside the Genil river.
Spend a full day exploring Granada’s historic streets and visit the amazing Alhambra fortress, or soak up the local atmosphere and relax in the tapas bars, restaurants and wine houses.
Note: We recommend booking entrance to the Alhambra Palace in advance, to guarantee your visit and avoid lengthy queuing on the day.
