Overview

What to expect

Experience St Moritz in summer, one of the Alps' most exclusive ski resorts, where stylish chalets and spa hotels sit by a blue lake beneath glistening peaks – to fully appreciate the town’s stunning setting, arrive a day early. Despite the sheer mountains, the cycling is mostly easy-going and you’ll follow the Inn Cycle Path through the Upper Engadin Valley, into the green forests of the Swiss National Park and onwards into Austria.

Tick off one idyllic mountain village at a time, stopping off to see beautiful churches and tall stone houses or explore narrow streets and relax with a cold drink, ice-cream or a slice of Swiss nut cake. Following the River Inn into the Tyrol region, you’ll pass castles and green gorges whilst you soak up the mountain views. Riding into Innsbruck makes the last day extra special and you’ll have time to see the city’s famous Golden Roof and Hofkirche church.

This tour was very satisfying to complete. As a regular visitor to Switzerland, I had never been to the St.Moritz area and the first three stages were a fantastic way of discovering the upper and lower Engadin. The village of Guarda is not to be missed, with beautiful decorated houses - a lovely reward after cycling up the hilliest bit of the journey. I booked the trip with the extra day at the start for the "loop tour" of St.Moritz (cycle to Maloja and back). I enjoyed it very much but would actually suggest a slight modification; shorten the loop slightly by cycling only as far as Sils (a very pretty town) and back - thus avoiding the section on the busy road to Maloja. Use the extra time to take a cable car up to the mountains from St.Moritz. (because I was staying for two nights, the hotel supplied a card that allowed free transport on the cable cars in the area - but I ran out of time to use it). The last two days of cycling are perhaps slightly less pretty, but it was extremely satisfying to reach Innsbruck under pedal power and to spend some time exploring that city. I would add that all of the logistical arrangements for the trip (supply of the bike, information, accommodation and luggage transfer) worked faultlessly.
