We've selected the best August cycling holidays for quieter routes, cooler temperatures and refreshing swimming spots to ensure you enjoy a breezy August cycling holiday.
It’s a common misconception that August is too hot or too crowded for a European cycling holiday. By choosing destinations packed with refreshing swimming spots, hidden off-the-beaten-path gems, or cooler northern climates, an August bike tour is the perfect way to enjoy summer across Europe at its best.
These recommended tours skip the big tourist traps and take you through quieter valley trails, peaceful nature reserves, and along island routes with plenty of opportunities to stop off for a refreshing lake or sea swim.
Most of our tours run in August, but if you're looking for the best for quieter routes, cooler temperatures and plenty of swimming spots, we've picked our top recommendations for the warmer summer months.

Pick your perfect Lake Constance bike tour
Average temperature in August: 25°C
One of my favourite places I've cycled, Lake Constance is undeniably a sun-drenched summer favourite in August thanks to its warmer water temperatures. There is truly no greater luxury after a morning in the saddle than pulling over to dive into the sparkling, crystal-clear lake, or spending a lazy afternoon unwinding at a charming, flower-lined local lido.

All five of our Lake Constance tours feature medieval villages, fairytale castles and spectacular waterfalls against the dramatic backdrop of the Alps. But each one also offers a different way to experience the area - you can enjoy scenic ferry rides, shoot off westwards to see the spectacular Rhine Falls, or cycle a lap of the entire lake across seven days.
"Our tour of Lake Constance was seamlessly organised by Freedom Treks and everything went to plan except the weather on one day! The bikes were great and the bike hire company was really helpful too. The quality of the cycle path around the lake and to the Rhinefalls made it a joy to cycle past the vineyards and orchards, and Reichenau island is particularly stunning. Would highly recommend this tour. Top tip: There are so many lovely places to investigate en route, an e-bike would allow you to maximise your time visiting them." - Jo Sanderson, UK (Lake Constance & Rhine Falls Bike Tour)

Cycle past Slovenia's castles, lakes and mountains
Average temperature in August: 27°C
Cycle through some of the most scenic parts of northwest Slovenia, enjoying a full week of magnificent summer scenery. While August brings hot weather to the lowlands, this high-alpine route offers beautifully fresh, pleasant mountain temperatures that are absolutely perfect for active days.

Expect a few rewarding inclines as you ride through deep, shaded pine forests and make gentle ascents - all with an optional uplift available if you want to save your legs and take an easier ride.
The famous lakeside town of Bled is a breathtaking place to start and finish your loop - I've been, and it's one of the places you just need to see in person! While it’s understandably buzzing in August, you can still enjoy the vibrant summer atmosphere and cool off with a dip in the lake before heading out to the quiet, untouched mountain trails. Staying a bit longer here is well worth it!
August is ideal swimming season, and after a morning in the saddle, nothing beats peeling off your gear to dive into the refreshing, brilliant blue waters of Lake Bohinj (another place I've been to!)

"Good support and information from Freedom Treks prior to our holiday and at the start of our tour. The route was nicely varied with roughly half in, or near, the mountains and the other half through flat agricultural areas and small towns and villages. There was one challenging climb, which we really enjoyed, which was followed by a descent through beautiful mountain pastures and villages." - Mike Walsh, UK

Island hop and cruise around Finland's Archipelago
Average temperature in August: 15°C
While the rest of Europe deals with the mid-summer rush, Finland’s peak domestic holiday season actually winds down at the end of July. Heading here in August means you get the absolute best of both worlds: the archipelago ferries are still fully running and the days remain long, but you’ll have the quiet roads and craggy coastlines almost entirely to yourself.

Even better, August is when the Baltic Sea reaches its highest summer temperature (usually a pleasant 20°C to 25°C), making it the absolute prime time for a refreshing open-water swim after a day in the saddle.
More than 20,000 small islands stretch out across calm, glittering waters, and regular ferries make hopping between them a breeze, giving you plenty of time to rest your legs with scenic cruises. From glistening bays and wooden boathouses to pine forests and waterside cafés, each island has its own unique appeal. After a day of exploring art galleries and wooden churches, you can even experience a classic Finnish summer tradition: a relaxing evening sauna right by the water!
"The Finnish archipelago provided a wonderful cycling experience. We cycled over numerous islands and across a number of waterways. We enjoyed many rural, seaside and forest vistas. The local flavour of the accommodation were highlights along with the two Finnish dégustation dinners. The city of Turku and the seaside town of Naantali were delightful, especially their architecture and maritime heritage. Overall a great trip to explore a small area of Finland outside the capital city." - Christine Allen, Australia

Longer distances and fewer crowds along the Baltic Coast
Average temperature in August: 20°C
While the rest of the continent queues at major landmarks, the Baltics remain a beautifully peaceful, relatively undiscovered region. International tourism drops off significantly here in August, giving you blissfully quiet coastal roads, open trails, and a genuinely authentic travel experience.
Sales Consultant Evan and Assistant Operations Manager Darryl cycled this tour in June 2025 and had a fantastic time. While Evan and Darryl did not cycle this tour over August, they did experience how quiet Latvia and Estonia are over the summer months. Read Evan's Rigan to Tallinn trip report to hear more about their time!

Daytime temperatures remain wonderfully pleasant - cool enough for comfortable long-distance riding, yet warm enough to enjoy the region's famous coastlines.
The moderate-to-challenging grading of this tour reflects the longer daily distances. However, paired with August's long daylight hours, you'll have all the time in the world to complete your ride before spending your evenings unwinding in medieval, cobbled streets, enjoying a thriving outdoor café and restaurant scene at its seasonal best.
If you'd prefer to regularly stop throughout the day instead, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to pause in quiet coves, sunbathe on the sandy beaches of Pärnu and Haapsalu, or even experience the local tradition of bathing in natural mineral waters and therapeutic mud baths.
To see more of the region and also include Lithuania, why not add the 7 night Baltic Coast - Klaipeda to Riga tour before this? It makes for a truly memorable ride through three countries over two weeks.
"An excellent cycling holiday - the bikes were ideal for the terrain, the hotels of very good quality and interesting and the route was great with lots to see and experience." - Mike Norman, UK

Tour along Holland’s Northern Coast by boat and bike
Average temperature in August: 22°C
By trading traditional hotels for a stay on a magnificent sailing ship - either the tastefully furnished Mare Fan Fryslân or the stylish Wapen Fan Fryslân - you get to experience the Netherlands from the water, completely away from touristy areas.
August brings beautiful, mild summer weather to the northern coast of the Netherlands, where a fresh breeze keeps pedallers cool while winding along lakeside harbour towns.

August is also a fantastic time for cycling through the pristine nature reserves, blooming wetlands, and wild sand dunes of the Frisian Islands. You'll enjoy completely traffic-free cycling on the peaceful island of Vlieland, and can pull over your bike at a traditional brewery on Texel island for a refreshing, cold summer pint.
You'll pause in harbour towns along the country's largest lake, IJsselmeer, all offering a relaxed atmosphere despite the "peak" holiday season.
"My husband and I had a great time on the North Holland sail and bike tour. The crew were all great at their jobs and did everything they could to make the holiday as fun and comfortable as possible. It was a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with interesting cycle routes and ample time to chill. We particularly enjoyed the meals - very tasty! The bikes are fairly basic, but they were all we needed for Holland's flat terrain. It was great to have the phone holders provided so we could watch the GPS as we cycled." - Lauri Seidlitz, Canada
