Experience the best of Portugal’s countryside and immerse yourself in the relaxed rural way of life. You’ll stay in a typical Alentejo farmhouse and venture out on daily cycles, with the option of rest days by the pool. Choose from five diverse cycle routes and stay from four nights to a full week. Visit some of Europe’s largest and oldest megalithic monuments, ride past Roman ruins, discover ancient watermills and take in the views from hilltop castles.

A region of rich gastronomy, you’ll have time to stop off at cheese farms, wine cellars and traditional villages renowned for their rustic meat pies, olives and fresh herbs. The Trip

Route

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival at the Farmhouse

Make your way from Lisbon airport to the city of Evora, where you will then be transferred to the beautiful Alentejo farmhouse.

  • Day 2: Route of the Megalithic Monuments 22 miles/35km or 28 miles/45km (with transfer) or 47miles/75km (without transfer)

Ride from the farmhouse along the Eco Trail and quiet roads, passing grazing cattle and sheep. Stop at the Church of Mitra and the Roman Ruins of Nossa Srª da Tourega. Visit the Dolmen of Zambujeiro, one of the largest megalithic monuments in Europe, the Cromelech of Almendres, one of Europe’s oldest megalithic monuments and, with beautiful views over Évora city, the Menhir of Almendres standing stone. From Guadalupe opt for a transfer back to the farmhouse (recommended) or cycle back along asphalt roads.

Terrain: Mostly gentle rolling dirt roads

Level: Easy with transfer (moderate without transfer)

  • Day 3: Route of The Famous carpets 22miles/36km (with transfer) or 47miles/75 km (without transfer)

Ride directly from the farmhouse to the pretty town of Arraiolos. Take the Eco Trail, along a disused railway, through small farms to Graça do Divor, a beautiful white and blue village renowned for its delicious meat pies. Continue to Arraiolos village and experience its historic centre, famous carpets and delicious pastries. Take in astounding views from the castle, visit a winery (approx. €6pp) and stop off at a cheese farm where they also produce local liquers and other regional delicacies (approx. €11pp). Optional transfer back after the cheese farm (recommended) or take the longer route back to the farmhouse passing by Divor Dam and its lovely blue lake.

Terrain: Gentle rolling road + 9 miles / 15km on dirt road

Level: Easy with transfer (moderate without transfer)

  • Day 4: The Wine and Cork Route 26miles/42km (with Transfer) or 46miles/74km (without transfer)

Cycle from the farmhouse through the countryside in the direction of Igrejinha, in an array of colour, making this a beautiful place to stop. From here take a ride down to S.Miguel de Machede visiting a cork factory en route and a visit to the dolmens is a must. End your day with an optional wine tasting (approx. €11pp booked in advance) and a transfer back to the farmhouse (recommended). Extend your ride if you prefer to cycle back to the farmhouse.

Terrain: Mostly flat asphalt roads, a few miles along a main road if you opt to cycle back

Level: Easy with transfer (moderate without transfer)

  • Day 5: Depart from the Farmhouse

Check out after breakfast or extend your stay with three extra nights.
