Follow the spectacular Wachau World Heritage Trail, a long-distance walking route through the Danube Valley between Krems and Melk. The route focuses on the vineyards, historic castle ruins, churches and villages dotted along the river in this famous winegrowing area. Setting off from Krems, the route takes you South West, walking up into the surrounding hills before dipping down into the valley, crossing the river several times through the week, giving you a taste of both banks of the Danube. The panoramic views from the observation platform at Buschandlwald and of the Alps from Seekopf are particular highlights, as are the castle ruins at Aggsbach and Melk’s impressive monastery. The week finishes with a relaxing river cruise back to Krems when you can watch the scenery pass by from the comfort of the boat’s deck.

The walking is rated Easy to Moderate, on well-maintained trails and vineyard paths. There is the opportunity for a rest day on day 4, and the last day is spent on the riverboat. This tour is a great introduction to a Danube walking holiday, with some gentle climbs in the rolling hills next to the river. Between walks, enjoy the atmosphere in the historic towns and villages and be sure to sample the local food and wine.
