Madeira is a fantastic destination for a walking holiday, with incredible natural beauty, established hiking trails and a warm climate for a long season. It’s known for its network of ‘levadas’, which are irrigation channels cut into the hillsides, making ideal pathways for walkers to access remote areas across the island. This tour follows a loop around Madeira, with routes along the rugged coastline, across the high central plateau and through the vibrant forests and orchards. From Porta da Cruz in the north, take the Kings Levada with incredible views of the mountainous interior and fast-flowing waterfalls. See the wild mountain flowers and high altitude meadows on the Paul da Serra plateau and then the terraced farms and towering sea cliffs on the south coast. Finish the tour in Funchal, the historic but cosmopolitan capital city.
The walking is rated moderate with daily routes of up to 10 miles, suited to experienced walkers with a good level of fitness. You’ll follow a mix of coastal paths and levadas which, in some places, require a head for heights. The tour takes in the highlights of Madeira, while still getting off the beaten track, giving you a varied and exhilarating week.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions about this tour. Simply click on a question to reveal the answer.
Take a bus or taxi to Funchal airport for your return flight.
Moderate walking holidays will follow paths or trails with some rocky terrain or loose surfaces. Some surefootedness is required, as well as an occasional head for heights. Most days will see you walking for between 4 and 6.5 hours. You can expect some steep up and down hill sections, possibly including some mountain ridges or summits, so good walking fitness is required and some hiking experience is highly recommended.
We are always on hand to offer advice, so please give us a call if you wish to chat about the tour’s grading.
